GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./Pingry School) scored his first goal of the fall and that was all the Gettysburg College men's soccer team needed to hand Haverford College its first loss in Centennial Conference play this season.
Haverford (6-2-2, 3-1-2 CC) arrived at Clark Field without a loss in conference play and only one setback on the year, that coming in its season opener back on Sept. 4. Gettysburg (3-7-1, 2-2-1 CC) came out unimpressed, possessing and maneuvering the ball into its attacking side of the field and setting up several early scoring opportunities.
Hynes, one of the Bullets' leading scorers from each of the past two seasons, entered the 11th contest of the year without a point on his resume, but he rectified that situation just under 17 minutes into the match with a give-and-go with freshman
Brooks Taylor (Nashville, Tenn./Taft School (Conn.) along the right side of the box. Hynes' shot from in front of the cage caromed off a defender and into the back of the goal at 16:50.
Freshman goalkeeper
Connor Darrell (Cream Ridge, N.J./Allentown) made a pair of saves in the opening period to keep the Fords off the board.
Gettysburg equaled its intensity in the final period, nearly adding to its lead just two minutes in. Both Hynes and classmate
Kyle DeBlois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) had point-blank opportunities to score but Haverford goalie Jamey Applegate made a pair of saves to keep the one-goal difference.
The Bullets once again just missed adding to their lead in the 72nd minute when a shot by freshman
Andrew McGuire (Mahwah, N.J./Bergen Catholic) was stopped from going into the goal by a sliding kick save by Matt Johnson.
Haverford managed just four shots in the second stanza, the last stopped by Darrell with less than four minutes remaining.
Gettysburg finished with an 18-12 shot advantage, but Haverford took twice as many corner kicks (6-3). Darrell finished with three saves to earn his first collegiate victory.
The Bullets hit the road for their next affair at Washington College on Friday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m.
