Bullets Headed Back to the Postseason

Gettysburg hosts Ursinus in CC Tournament opening match

Sarah Yeager started both of Gettysburg's 2007 playoff contests.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – A banner season for the Gettysburg College women's soccer program will continue into the postseason with the Bullets hosting Ursinus College in Wednesday's Centennial Conference Tournament opening round.

Gettysburg (12-6, 7-3 CC) will host Ursinus (10-6, 6-4 CC) at Clark Field at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The winner will advance to the conference semis to play top seed Dickinson College (14-2-1, 9-1 CC) on Saturday, Nov. 6, at noon. The Red Devils will also host Saturday's second semifinal between Johns Hopkins University (15-3, 8-2 CC) and Haverford College (12-5, 7-3 CC) at about 3 p.m. and Sunday's championship contest slated for 1 p.m.

Gettysburg captured the fourth seed thanks in large part to 3-0 win over Muhlenberg College in its regular-season finale this past Saturday. It was another grueling and competitive season in the Centennial Conference as seven teams finished with conference records above .500.

“To make the playoffs is always an indication after a tough and long conference season that you have played well,” said Head Coach Matt Garrett, “and it gives us an opportunity to keep playing the game we love and to keep getting better.”

This is Gettysburg's first trip to the postseason since Garrett's initial year at the head of the program in 2007. That year, the Bullets posted a 1-0 win over Haverford in the first round before suffering a 2-0 loss to Johns Hopkins in the semis. Only a pair of players remains from that season, but that lack of experience won't hinder this fall's squad according to Garrett.

“We have a good squad which is young and confident and we will just approach the game like every game this season – focus on the performance and not the result and try to play our game. We know if we can pass the ball well it will give us a good platform to be successful.”

Gettysburg has five Centennial titles on its resume, but the program has been held out of the championship match since a 4-3 win over Johns Hopkins in 2004.

Gettysburg quickly emerged as a contender this season and it ended the year on a high note with wins in five of its last six matches, falling only to then No. 13 Dickinson 3-0 on Oct. 26. The Bullets beat their Wednesday opponent 1-0 at Clark Field in early October.

Gettysburg has done its job on both sides of the ball this fall. The offense has put up its highest goal, assist, and point totals in six years, while the defense has logged a goals against average under 1.00 for the third consecutive season. Perhaps the most impressive stat concerning this fall's team is 16 different players have found the back of the net, breaking the previous high of 15 set in 1998 and 2000.

“Having 16 different goal scores shows the quality of squad this year,” noted Garrett. “We rely on everyone to pass, move, and attack and defend and not just one or two individuals.”

Among the team's leading producers are sophomore Casey Attanasio (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) and freshman Rachel West (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle). Attanasio was red hot over the final weeks of the season, scoring five goals in a nine-day span, including two in an overtime win at Swarthmore College. She leads the team with eight goals and 20 points this fall.

West has been a major playmaker in her debut season. She leads the conference with eight assists and her five goals and 18 points rank second on the team.

Senior Sarah Yeager (Westport, Conn./Staples) started each of Gettysburg's playoff matches in 2007 and she has started all 18 contests this fall, helping the team post a 0.88 GAA and eight shutouts. Junior goalkeeper Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) has started all but one contest between the pipes.

The winner of the Centennial Conference Tournament will receive the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament which begins Thursday, Nov. 11.
