BALTIMORE – Johns Hopkins scored three times over a 3:38 span and the fourth-seeded Blue Jays defeated fifth-seeded Gettysburg 4-1 in the Centennial Conference men's soccer first-round game Wednesday evening at Homewood Field.
With the win Johns Hopkins (13-3-3), which received two goals from Scott Bukoski and a pair of assists from Nick White, advances to the conference semifinals on Saturday, when it will visit top-seeded and ninth-ranked Swarthmore College. Second-seeded Franklin & Marshall College will take on third-seeded Muhlenberg College in the other semifinal, also at Swarthmore on Saturday.
The Bullets, who saw their season come to a close at 5-10-2, received their lone goal from freshman
Tyler Shaffer.
The two teams were meeting in the Centennial Conference tournament for the fifth time in the last six years. It was the Blue Jays fourth straight postseason win over the Bullets.
The Jays took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on Bukoski's first tally of the day, which came off an assist from Pat Lawson. Hopkins outshot the Bullets 8-1 in the opening stanza.
Brandon Sumpio kicked off Hopkins' three-goal spree in the 55th minute, converting White's first assist. Corey Adams then struck less than a minute later with White providing his second consecutive assist. Buckoski capped the surge just under two minutes later with his seventh career goal against Gettysburg, including his third this season, on a pass from Kevin Hueber.
Schaffer broke up the shutout in the 77th minute on a low shot from 20 yards out, depositing the ball inside the right post. Sophomore

Freshman
Connor Darrell made five saves for Gettysburg while Ravi Gill turned did not make a save in goal for Hopkins, which finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots.
