Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Tied 1-1 at the end of 110 minutes of soccer, Gettysburg College and Ursinus College went to a shootout with the Bears connecting on all of their attempts to advance to the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Women's Soccer Tournament.

Regulation and two overtime periods provided no resolution to Wednesday night's affair at Clark Field, setting the stage for the ultimate showdown on the soccer pitch. Ursinus (10-6-1) started the penalty-kick shootout as Cecilia Mansson booted the ball top-shelf past Gettysburg goalie Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River). Junior Lauren Johnson (Morristown, N.J./Morristown-Beard) had her ensuing attempt stopped by Kara DiJoseph.

Both teams were perfect on their next three attempts with freshman Rachel West (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) pulling Gettysburg (12-6-1) to 4-3. The Bears rode the momentum they gained with the first make as Lisa Pan nailed the clinching attempt to close. Ursinus improved to 3-0 all-time in shootouts in the CC Tournament and the squad advances on to the semifinals to face host and top seed Dickinson College on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Gettysburg went on the attack early in the contest with 10 of the first 11 shots, including a hit by sophomore Casey Attanasio (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) that hit the far post in the 32nd minute.

The Bullets struck late in the period as Attanasio set up senior Jordann Smak (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) for a goal at 37:31. Ursinus was quick to answer, knocking in the equalizer just 1:40 later as Jess Porcelan finished off a pass from Angela Lenzo in front of the cage.

The Bears went on the offensive to start the final period, testing Rivera with three shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. Rivera halted them all, including hard strikes by Sarah Cogswell and Porcelan.

On the other end, DiJoseph kept pace with four second-half saves, the last coming on a shot by freshman Tobi Goss (Sandy Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends School) in the 83rd minute. DiJoseph also made one save in the first overtime to preserve the deadlock.

Gettysburg finished with a 25-10 shot advantage, while corner kicks were even at three apiece.

Wednesday's decision caps an outstanding season for the Orange and Blue. The team produced its best win total since 2006 and its best offensive campaign since 2004. A school-record 16 Bullets reached the scoring column this fall and all but two are slated to return in 2011.
