GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Messiah College opened up the throttle with three second-half goals en route to a 4-0 decision over the Gettysburg College men's soccer team in the Bullets' first home contest of the 2010 season.
Messiah (4-1) ranked 18th by the NSCAA and 10th by D3Soccer.com, out-shot Gettysburg (1-4) 23-10 in the contest, but the first goal did not come off the foot of a Falcon. A pass from the Bullets' backfield was misplayed by sophomore goalie
Jamie Hahn (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), resulting in the ball nestling into the back of the net 11 minutes in.
Gettysburg's defense resumed a strong stance for the remainder of the half, keeping Messiah off the board. Hahn made a pair of saves in the 31st and 32nd minutes to maintain the deficit.
Four minutes into the second period, Geoff Pezon made a move on the goal from the left side, but his initial shot was blocked by a Bullet back. The ball stayed near the goal and Pezon's momentum carried him in its path for an unassisted tally at 49:01.
The host's lone shot on goal came several minutes later as senior
Teddy Smith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) corralled a pass at the top of the box. His ensuing touch ahead was knocked down by Messiah keeper Kyle Fulks and the ball was cleared out by the defense.
Messiah added two late goals in the final two minutes. Pezon booted in his second score of the game off a feed by Dan Squire in the 82nd minute and Mark Jeschke reached the scoring column seven minutes later off a nice feed from the middle by Nick Thompson.
Smith, juniors
Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./Pingry School) and
Kyle DeBlois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton), and sophomore
Andrew McLane (Newtown, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) each recorded a pair of shots and Hahn finished with five saves for Gettysburg.
The Bullets kick off their Centennial Conference schedule with a road trip to Ursinus College on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 3:30 p.m.
