ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Freshman
Rachel West (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) scored twice in less than three minutes in the second half to lead Gettysburg College to a 3-1 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) College in women's soccer action Wednesday night.
A myriad of bus issues couldn't prevent the Bullets from winning their third-straight contest to start 2010. Despite a late start in Seahawk Stadium, Gettysburg was the first team to take the offensive initiative as junior
Sam Hellerman (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) took a stab at the goal in the sixth minute only to be turned away by St. Mary's (0-1-1) goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz.
Goalkeeping proved to be the better in the opening stanza as junior
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) made four saves for the Bullets and Wirtz and Allison Griffin combined for three saves for the hosts.
The scoreboard was put into action just 1:16 into the second period as Gettysburg sophomore
Casey Attanasio (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) floated a ball into the top corner for her second goal of the fall.
St. Mary's was unable to answer the Bullets' call, but not for lack of effort as the hosts poured in 13 second-half shots. Four were stonewalled by Rivera as part of her eight-save performance, while another in the 84th minute was knocked away by a defender.
In the meantime, West took over the spotlight, knocking in her first goal in the 68th minute off a corner kick by sophomore
Suzy Englot (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill). It only took 2:17 for the Gettysburg first-year to strike again, this time booting home a ball put into the box by Hellerman at 70:10. The final tally tied West with Attanasio and Hellerman for the team lead in scoring with eight points this fall.
The Seahawks avoided the shutout with a score in the 81st minute. Following a corner kick, Bridget McGovern corralled the ball and sent it to the post where Tori Eskay tapped it in.
St. Mary's out-shot Gettysburg 20-9 and took eight more corner kicks (10-2) than the visitors.
Gettysburg travels to William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y., this weekend (Sept. 11-12) for a pair of matches against 2009 NCAA Tournament participants. The Bullets face Farmingdale State College (3-0-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by Denison University (2-1-1) on Sunday at 11 a.m.
