Juniata Spoils Baseball’s Home Opener

Simard Scores 100th Career Run

Chris Simard became just the seventh Bullet to score 100 career runs.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Juniata College scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning and the Eagles defeated Gettysburg 12-6 in the Bullets' home opener Tuesday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

Senior Chris Simard reached a milestone for Gettysburg (6-9), scoring his 100th career run with his second of the game in the eighth inning. Just the seventh player in school history to reach the milestone, Simard finished 3-for-6 while freshman Nate Simon went 3-for-5 for the Bullets, who lost their home opener for the first time since 2006.

Johnny Martinez led Juniata (7-7) at the plate, going 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs, while Andrew Hirsch also collected three hits. Ryan Morrison (2-0) worked six innings to pick up the win for the Eagles.

Gettysburg, which also received two hits apiece from sophomore Pat Cody and freshman Tommy LeNoir, was outhit just 15-13 but left 16 runners on base. Senior Matt Karis had an infield single to extend his hitting streak to nine and move to within three hits of 100 for his career.

Morrison and sophomore starter John Donovanlooked sharp in the early going, and it was a scoreless game heading into the bottom of the fourth when the Bullets went up 1-0 on an RBI-single from LeNoir.

Juniata pushed across four runs on five hits in the fifth before Gettysburg answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, as Cody and senior Cam Riera each drove in runs with RBI-singles to make it 4-3.

The Eagles then broke it open in the sixth, when they sent nine batters to the plate before the Bullets recorded an out. A total of 13 Eagles batted in the inning, which included seven hits, two walks, and one error.

Gettysburg blanked Juniata over the final three innings, with junior Michael Odierna throwing the final two, while the Bullets plated three runs over the final two innings to set the final score.

Morrison yielded three runs on eight hits and five walks while Donovan (0-1) left the game after five innings. He gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

The Bullets are scheduled to host Elizabethtown College on Wednesday in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
