GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Washington College held Gettysburg to six hits and one run en route to a doubleheader sweep in Centennial Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

The Shoremen (15-10, 6-3 CC) won the opener 4-1 on a seven-inning four-hitter from Shane Mattingly before Kyle Aldrich fired a nine-inning two-hitter in the nightcap.

Gettysburg pitchers also threw complete games, with senior Matt Karis taking the loss in the opener and sophomore Ryan Taylor tossing a nine-inning, six-hitter in the nightcap, striking out 10 and walking none. It was Taylor's third straight game with at least 10 strikeouts, and he has gone 2-1 with a 1.00 ERA and 32 Ks in his three Centennial Conference starts.

Nick Marinelli, Ryan Normoyle, and John Rolewicz all went 4-for-8 at the plate over the twinbill for Washington.

The doubleheader was rescheduled from yesterday due to heavy rain on Friday.

In the opener, the Shoremen did the bulk of their damage in the first inning, scoring three runs on four hits and one error. Normoyle drove in a run with a single, and a throwing error from the outfield allowed a second run to score. Tyler Cotterell ripped an RBI-double to cap the inning.

It was more than enough offense for Mattingly (4-2), who retired the first 11 batters of the game before freshman Nate Simon singled through the right side with two outs in the fourth.

Karis settled in after the first, and although the Shoremen put a runner on base in every inning, he blanked the visitors from the second through the fifth. Washington pushed its lead to 4-0 on a pair of singles in the seventh.

The Bullets (8-16, 2-7 CC) finally got to Mattingly in the seventh, when senior Chris Simard, Simon, and Karis connected for three straight singles to start the inning, with Simard scoring when Karis' sharply-hit ball was bobbled by the leftfielder. However, Mattingly went on to get three straight outs and finished with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Karis (2-4) allowed 12 hits and one walk while striking out five.

Simard's run gave him 104 for his career, as he moved into a tie with Sean McGee '08 for third in school history.

Nick Marinelli was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs in the opener for Washington while Simon finished 2-for-3 for the Bullets.

In the second game, Aldrich and Taylor were both sharp from the start, and neither team scored over the first three innings. Aldrich allowed just one baserunner, which was the result of an error, over the first five innings while just one Shoreman reached base against Taylor over the opening three frames.

Washington scored the game's only runs with two in the fourth. Marinelli and Normoyle stroked back-to-back singles to start the inning before Rolewicz drilled an RBI-double to right-center. After Taylor induced a pop-out, Dwight Wilcox hit a dying blooper between first and second. Charging from second, Simard appeared to have made the catch but it was ruled a trap, allowing Normoyle to score. However, Taylor escaped further damage by getting a flyout and strikeout.

Freshman Tommy LeNoir broke up Aldrich's no-hit bid with a single to right-center leading off the sixth. The Bullets had a golden scoring opportunity when senior Cory Jackmuff drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no one out, but Aldrich retired the next three batters, including back-to-back grounders to himself for the second and third outs.

Gettysburg reached base just three times the rest of the way. Junior Clint O'Brien drew a two-out walk in the seventh but Aldrich came back with a strikeout, and in the ninth Simard led off with a single. However, Aldrich responded by inducing a 4-6-3 double play, and after Karis was walked the game ended on a groundout.

After the fourth, Taylor (3-3) found his groove and tossed four straight perfect innings. From the fourth through the ninth he retired 15 straight batters, then worked out of a two-out jam in the ninth, getting a groundout with runners on first and second to conclude another impressive outing.

Normoyle and Rolewicz both went 2-for-4 in the nightcap while Aldrich (3-2) struck out five and walked three.

The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action on Monday, when they visit Dickinson College at 3:30 p.m. for a nine-inning game that was rescheduled from Friday.
