Box Score
MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Gettysburg erupted for season-highs in runs and hits as the Bullets defeated host Penn State-Harrisburg 13-4 in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon.
All nine Bullet starters hit safely as Gettysburg (12-22) banged out 20 hits, the most since its 20-hit attack in a 14-10 win over New Jersey City in Florida on March 11 of last season. The team also posted its highest scoring output since a 14-7 win over Washington College a year ago.
Sophomore
Pat Cody hit his first career home run while finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Bullets. Freshman Patrick O'Grady, sophomore
Tommy LeNoir, and senior
Cam Riera all cracked three hits while senior
Chris Simard was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Simard also broke into Gettysburg's career top-10 list for hits, moving into a tie for ninth with Chip Rossi '89 at 146. Senior
Matt Karis finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
Freshman
Nate Simon added a pair of hits as did classmate
Zach Parsons, who was making his first collegiate start.
On the mound, sophomore
Ryan Taylor was sharp in the early going, throwing four perfect innings to start the game. He left after seven innings, allowing two runs and scattering seven hits to pick up the win while finishing off an outstanding season. Taylor (5-4) struck out four and for the fourth straight start did not walk a batter, a span that has reached 33 consecutive innings.
Gettysburg jumped all over Nittany Lion starter Chris Sabol for seven runs over the first two innings. After the Bullets scored two in the first, the Orange & Blue pushed across five more in the second on five hits, two errors, and one walk. Cody capped the inning with a two-run homer.
The Bullets went up 9-0 with a two-run, five-hit fourth. In the meantime, Penn State (7-28) went 12-up, 12-down to start the game against Taylor before Nick Knull led off the fifth with a double. He was stranded at second, however, and the Lions would not score until the sixth, when they strung together a trio of singles. The hosts scored again in the seventh on back-to-back doubles.
Gettysburg padded its lead with a four-run ninth. LeNoir got things started with a leadoff triple before scoring on a wild pitch. The Bullets then drew three straight walks, setting the stage for RBI singles from O'Grady and freshman
Kevin Wilson and a run-scoring groundout from Karis.
Sophomore
Will Patterson threw a scoreless eighth for the Bullets before freshman
Rob Stalzer yielded a pair of runs in the ninth.
Gettysburg concludes its season on Wednesday, when it hosts Susquehanna University at 4 p.m. in another non-conference outing.
