Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Trailing by three entering the final inning, Gettysburg rallied to make it a one-run game, but Dickinson escaped with the tying run on second as the Red Devils topped the Bullets 9-8 in a Centennial Conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.
Freshman
Nate Simon and junior Clint O'Brien led the Bullets (8-14, 2-5 CC) at the plate, with Simon going 2-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs, and two runs and O'Brien finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a triple.
Tyler Rosa went 2-for-4 for Dickinson (14-10, 1-6 CC), which picked up its first Centennial Conference victory of the season.
Freshman
Alex Freeman led off the ninth and drew a pinch-hit walk, chasing reliever Andrew Sterling. Dickinson then brought on ace pitcher Sean White, who was greeted with a single from Patrick O'Grady. Two batters later, Simon drilled a bases-clearing double into left-center, but White retired the final two hitters to pick up his first save of the year.
Gettysburg starter
Kyle Conklin was in a groove early, retiring the first 11 batters he faced and striking out four through the first three innings. In the meantime, the Bullets took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI-double from Simon and a run-scoring single from senior
Matt Karis.
Dickinson got on the scoreboard in the fourth, when a two-out error led to an RBI-double from Rosa. Conklin blanked the Devils in the fifth before Dickinson plated three unearned runs in the sixth to go ahead 4-2.
The Bullets answered right back with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame, with O'Brien providing the big blow – a three-run triple to center in which he scored on an outfield error to make it 6-4.
The Red Devils added five more runs over the final three innings against Conklin and a trio of Bullet relievers to take a 9-6 lead before Gettysburg's late rally.
Garrett Horan started for Dickinson and received a no-decision, leaving after 3 2/3 innings in which he gave up two runs on two hits and seven walks while striking out seven. Sterling (1-0) picked up the win in relief, going 2 1/3 innings.
Conklin left after facing three batters in the seventh and finished with a line of seven hits, six runs (two earned), one walk, and five strikeouts. Sophomore Michael Odierna (0-2) was charged with the loss while working one inning of relief.
Gettysburg returns to the diamond on Friday, when it visits Dickinson in a single nine-inning game starting at 3:30 p.m.
