Men’s Lax to Face Roanoke in NCAA Second-Round Rematch

Maroons Edged Bullets in Overtime Last Season

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Following a victory over the University of Scranton in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament, the 12th-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team will now visit the seventh-ranked Roanoke College Maroons in a rematch of last season's second-round match-up.

Face-off for the second-round tilt is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at Roanoke's Donald J. Kerr Stadium in Salem, Va.

Ticket prices for Wednesday's game are $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and $1 for children under 12.

Both teams opened tournament play with a first-round victory at home on Wednesday, as the Bullets (12-6) defeated the Royals 8-3 while Roanoke (15-3) breezed by previously-unbeaten Colorado College 25-5.

The winner of the game will advance to the tournament quarterfinals to face the winner of Saturday's second-round game between No. 3 Stevenson University and Cabrini College.

Gettysburg and Roanoke are tied 5-5 in the all-time series that dates back to 1984. The Maroons have captured one-goal victories in each of the last two meetings, both of which have occurred in the NCAA playoffs.

Gettysburg is making its eighth consecutive and 21st overall appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament while Roanoke is appearing in the Big Dance for the sixth time in the last seven years and for the 23rd time overall.

The Bullets and Maroons have met twice in the NCAA tournament, with Roanoke winning both meetings. The Maroons prevailed 13-12 in the 2006 second round and 11-10 in overtime in the 2010 second round. In last season's meeting at Gettysburg, Roanoke rushed out to a 4-0 lead, only to see the Bullets rally. Danno Lynch sent the game to overtime when he scored with 5:02 left, but Jeff Keating scored off the opening face-off of the extra session to win it for Roanoke. Keating finished with four goals and two assists while Pat Sartory scored four goals for the Bullets.

Gettysburg used a 5-0 run to end the game in its victory over Scranton on Wednesday. Senior #J.C. Ward and freshman Martin Manilla# scored two goals apiece for the Bullets while Lynch added one goal and two assists, with his first helper giving him 100 career points. Sophomore #J.T. McCook# finished with 12 saves as the Bullets posted their second-best defensive performance in NCAA playoff history, ranking only behind their 18-2 second-round win over Cabrini in 2004.

For the season, Sartory leads the Bullets with 29 goals while while Ward (26) and Lynch (25) are close behind. Ward is the team leader in assists (17) while senior Chris Cahill has contributed 16 goals and 15 assists. In addition, freshman Henry Tesar has closed the single with a flurry, scoring 11 of his 14 goals over the team's last six games. Manilla and senior Andrew Ryan have added 15 and 12 goals, respectively.

Defensively, the Bullets are holding their opponents to a Centennial Conference-leading 6.53 goals per game, which also ranks 15th in Division III. Starting defenseman John Odierna (38 ground balls, 31 caused turnovers), Tommy Barnett (44 ground balls, 28 caused turnovers), and Billy Grayson (39 ground balls, 29 caused turnovers) have led a defense that has allowed only two opponents to reach a double-digit goal total. McCook has been the goalie of record in every game and has 6.57 goals-against average and a 60.0 save percentage. In the team's three postseason contests, he has averaged 14.3 saves per game.

Sophomore Nick Avedisian has won 60.3 percent of his face-offs and was leading the Centennial Conference in the category as of the conference's latest statistical report.

Roanoke received an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament after defeating Lynchburg College 12-10 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship game on Sunday. Against Colorado College, Richard Lachlan piled up eight goals to lead the Maroons, who outshot the Tigers 63-30. Keating added three goals and five assists while Justin Tuma won 14-of-17 face-offs.

The Maroons carry the nation's third-leading offense into Saturday's game and are averaging 16.7 goals per game. Lachlan leads the team with 52 tallies while Keating has posted 47 goals and a team-best 30 assists. Trey Keeley (25 goals, 26 assists), Tuma (25 goals, 25 assists), and Mike Hayden (23 goals, 22 assists) are among the team's additional threats.

In goal, Charlie Pease has played the majority of the minutes, going11-2 with a 10.90 goals-against average and a 52.6 save percentage. Tuma, the ODAC Player of the Year, has won 64.3 percent (236-for-367) of his face-offs and picked up a school-record 182 ground balls.
