SALEM, Va. – Freshman
Martin Manilla scored a season-high four goals, but the 12th-ranked Bullets saw their season come to a close against Roanoke College for the second year in a row, falling 15-9 to seventh-ranked Maroons in the second round of the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament Saturday afternoon in Donald J. Kerr Stadium.
Roanoke (16-3), which received four goals from Joey Coretti and 18 saves from Charles Pease, will advance to the NCAA quarterfinals to take on third-ranked Stevenson University, a 13-8 winner over Cabrini College.
Freshman
Henry Tesar added one goal and two assists for Gettysburg (12-7), which fell behind 10-4 in the first half. Senior
Chris Cahill contributed one goal and one assist to finish his career with 109 points while sophomore #J.T. McCook
finished with nine saves for the Bullets while classmate Nick Avedisian# won 16-of-28 face-offs.
Mike Hayden also posted a hat trick for Roanoke, finishing with three goals and one assist, while Richard Lachlan and Drew Bracken notched two goals and one assist apiece for the Maroons, who defeated Gettysburg 11-10 in overtime in the NCAA second round last season.
Roanoke, who entered the game with the nation's third-leading offense (16.7 goals per game), never trailed after bolting to an early 5-1 lead, using a 4-0 run that spanned 5:47 of the first quarter. Cahill put the Bullets on the scoreboard when he tied it 1-1 with 12:10 on the clock, finding the lower right corner of the net with a running left-hander.
Manilla scored the final two goals of the opening quarter to make it a 5-3 game after 15 minutes of play. He found of the back of the net from the right wing with 4:32 on the clock after taking a cross from senior
Danno Lynch, then fought his way through traffic to score from in close with 3:40 left. Lynch's assist set his final career points total at 102.
Junior
Pat Sartory completed a 3-0 run for Gettysburg just over two minutes into the second quarter. Cutting to the cage on the right wing, Sartory accepted a cross from Tesar before flicking in a quick wrister to make it 5-4.
The Maroons responded with a 5-0 run, including two goals from Coretti, to assume their 10-4 lead with 2:02 left in the opening half. Manilla stopped the bleeding when he posted his first career hat trick, going top shelf from the right doorstep off another Tesar assist as the Bullets went into the intermission down 10-5.
Roanoke pushed their advantage to six when Hayden struck a minute and a half into the second stanza before the Bullets answered with back-to-back tallies. With a slight drizzle turning into a steady rain, Manilla converted with 11:40 left in the quarter, going far post for his fourth goal. Senior
Andrew Ryan made it a four-goal game (11-7) when he sent home a laser from 15 yards out with 11:07 showing. However, that's as close as Gettysburg would get.
Lachlan answered just 10 seconds later, kicking off a 4-0 run and making it 12-7. Neither team would score for the remainder of the quarter, which included a brief downpour in the final minutes of the period.
The Maroons outscored the Bullets 3-0 to start the fourth quarter, with Coretti's final goal making it 15-7 with 5:21 left. Sophomore
Evan Thomas and Tesar set the final score with a pair of goals inside the final 3:56.
Roanoke held a 46-42 advantage in shots and a 37-33 edge in ground balls.
