COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Freshman
Parker Delmolino scored in the 64th minute to lift the Gettysburg College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Ursinus College in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams on Friday night.
Gettysburg (2-3, 1-0 CC) put a three-match losing skid to rest with the victory over Ursinus (1-5, 0-1 CC). Delmolino provided all the offense the Bullets would need, following up a corner kick by sophomore Andrew LaFontaine and a headed pass by junior
Craig Heckman at 63:55 for his first collegiate goal.
Sophomore goalie
Connor Darrell kept Ursinus off the board in the opening period with a pair of saves against Ricky Griffith in the 26th and 34th minutes.
After Darrell stopped a shot by Christian Cruz to kick off the final period, the Bullets went to work on the offensive end. Senior
Eric Hynes and sophomore
Tyler Shaffer put three consecutive shots on goal, two by Hynes, but all were saved by Ursinus keeper Mike Alfieri as part of a five-save performance. Just 10 minutes after the flurry, LaFontaine set up the corner kick that led to the game-winning goal.
Gettysburg's defense put the clamp on the Bears over the remainder, allowing only two off-target shots.
Darrell finished with three saves to record his second career shutout. Hynes led a 14-8 shot advantage for the visitors with four attempts, while Shaffer added three.
Next up for Gettysburg is a non-conference showdown at home with the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m.
