GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Tyler Shaffer posted a goal and an assist as Gettysburg ended a 10-year drought against the University of Mary Washington with a 2-0 victory in men's soccer action Wednesday night at Clark Field.
The last time Gettysburg (3-3) defeated Mary Washington (3-4), a 3-0 win in 2001, current head coach Brett Kelly '03 was a senior captain in the Bullets' backfield. Since then, the Eagles have gone 8-0-2 against the Bullets with six of those decisions by one goal.
That trend changed on Wednesday night as Gettysburg came out firing. Just 38 seconds into the contest, the hosts took a shot at the goal and continued the pursuit. Shaffer set up the match's first goal, racing down the left side of the field and lacing a perfect pace in front of the cage. Senior
Eric Hynes finished off the play with a header to give the Bullets a 1-0 lead at 5:50.
After out-shooting the visitors 6-2 in the first period, Gettysburg continued the assault early in the final half. Hynes appeared to have a second goal all but sewn up, but Mary Washington goalie Blake Weiss made a diving kick save to preserve the one-goal margin in the 54th minute.
The Eagles threatened in the 61st minute as a shot by Tommy Sangbouasy caromed hard off a defender toward the goal. Sophomore goalie
Connor Darrell was quick on his feet and punched the ball over the cage. He stopped Sangbouasy once more less than a minute later.
The Bullets came right back on the other end of the field with Shaffer leading the charge. The Biglerville High grad deftly maneuvered past a defender down the left side of the box and slid the ball pass the on-coming goalie in the 67th minute.
Each team managed one more shot on goal in the final minutes of the game with both attempts stopped by the opposing keepers.
Gettysburg finished with 15-10 and 4-2 edges in shots and corner kicks, respectively.
Darrell finished with four saves to earn his second shutout in as many opportunities. Weiss finished with four stops for Mary Washington.
Gettysburg resumes its Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, Sept. 21, as Washington College comes to Clark Field for a 1 p.m. meeting
