RADNOR, Pa. – In the final game before its Centennial Conference opener, the 16th-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team dropped an 8-1 decision at 18th-ranked Cabrini College Wednesday afternoon.
Cabrini (4-2), which scored the game's first three goals, earned its first-ever win over the Bullets in seven tries.
Bobby Thorp led Cabrini with three goals and two assists while Mike Leyden scored two goals. Erick Zarzecki made eight saves for the Cavaliers, who held a 37-18 shot advantage.
Junior
Ryan Fumai scored the lone goal for Gettysburg (2-3). Playing the final three quarters, sophomore
Jon Maddalone made a career-high eight saves and yielded five goals after junior #J.T. McCook# stopped four shots in the opening period.
Cabrini scored inside the final 10 seconds in each of the first two quarters. The hosts led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter after Matt Biegel struck with eight seconds to go.
Fumai made it a two-goal game when he converted a dish from junior
Bobby DeWees with 10:05 left in the opening half. That's how the score remained until Damian Sobieski found the back of the net with 5:20 showing. Leyden added a goal two seconds before the horn to give the Cavaliers a 5-1 halftime lead.
The Cabrini defense made the lead stand up, blanking the Bullets the rest of the way. The Cavs added one goal in the third quarter and two tallies 45 seconds apart midway through the fourth quarter.
Gettysburg kicks off Centennial Conference play on Saturday, when it visits Haverford College at noon.
