Gettysburg to Face Stevenson in NCAA Second Round

Bullets, Mustangs Meet for First Time Since 2009 Final Four

Defensive midfielder Andrew Toner and the Bullets visit Stevenson in the NCAA second round on Saturday.
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Following a win over Ohio Wesleyan University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, the 20th-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team will now visit the fifth-ranked Stevenson University Mustangs in the second round.

Face-off is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. at Stevenson's Mustang Stadium in Owings Mills, Md.

Both teams opened tournament play with a first-round victory at home on Wednesday, as the Bullets (11-6) defeated the Battling Bishops 7-4 while Stevenson (16-4) downed Birmingham Southern College 13-2.

The winner of the game will advance to the tournament quarterfinals to face the winner of Saturday's second-round game between No. 3 Lynchburg College and No. 8 Denison University.

Gettysburg and Stevenson have met just three times, with the Bullets holding a 2-1 edge. They have not played since the 2009 NCAA Division III semifinals, when Gettysburg defeated the top-ranked Mustangs 12-7.

Gettysburg is making its ninth consecutive and 22nd overall appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament while Stevenson is appearing in the tournament for the fourth time overall and the fourth year in a row.

The Bullets used a 4-0 run to open the game en route to its victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday. Freshman Robby Maddux scored the game's first three goals and finished with four tallies while junior Evan Thomas posted one goal and two assists. Sophomore Jon Maddalone turned aside seven shots in goal.

For the season, sophomore Martin Manilla has led Gettysburg offensively with 35 goals while Maddux is second on the team with 25 tallies. Senior Caldwell Rohrbach has led the Bullets with 14 assists while freshman Bijan Firouzan has notched 10 goals and 13 assists.

Defensively, senior Billy Grayson has racked up a team-best 21 caused turnovers to go with 27 ground balls while junior long-stick midfielder Ian Casella has contributed 19 caused turnovers and 34 ground balls – marks that rank second on the team. Between the pipes, Maddalone has made the last three starts and for the season has gone 6-3 with a 7.41 goals-against average and a .564 save percentage. Junior Nick Avedisian has won 54.5 percent of his face-offs and leads the Bullets with 48 ground balls.

Stevenson received an at-large bid in the NCAA tournament after falling to top-ranked Salisbury University 12-9 in the Capital Athletic Conference championship game back on April 28.  Against Birmingham Southern, junior Tyler Reid posted five goals and one assist while freshman Sam Wyatt won 10-of-13 face-offs as the Mustangs out-shot the Panthers 47-25.

For the season, freshman Stephen Banick has led the team with 58 points on 31 goals and 27 assists while Reid and senior Justin Lea have added 25 and 24 goals, respectively. Sophomore Chris Dashiell has contributed 18 goals and 25 assists.
