OWINGS MILS, Md. – Stevenson University outscored Gettysburg 5-0 in the second quarter and the fifth-ranked Mustangs topped the 20th-ranked Bullets 13-6 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday evening at Mustang Stadium.
With the loss, Gettysburg closes the season with a record of 11-7. Stevenson (17-4) moves on to the tournament quarterfinals to face No. 8 Denison University, a 10-5 winner over Lynchburg College.
Freshman
Robby Maddux led the Bullets with his fifth hat trick of the season, finishing with three goals and one assist. It was his second hat trick in a row in the NCAA tournament, as he also scored four goals in the Bullets 7-4 win over Ohio Wesleyan in the first round on Wednesday. Sophomore
Jon Maddalone finished with 14 saves – one shy of his career-high – while facing 43 shots.
Tyler Reid recorded three goals and two assists for Stevenson, which led 11-6 before scoring twice in the last 25 seconds. Justin Lea and Chris Dashiell scored three goals apiece while Nick Rossi handed out four assists for the Mustangs, who won 15-of-22 face-offs.
Stevenson scored the game's first goal, when Rossi struck on the night's opening shot just 1:02 into the contest. But the Bullets held the Mustangs to four shots over the remainder of the quarter and took the lead with a pair of goals late in the half.
Sophomore
Martin Manilla went low for his team-leading 36th goal of the season with 1:06 left before Maddux connected from the left post on an assist from freshman
Bijan Firouzan for his first goal with 12 seconds remaining, giving the Bullets a 2-1 advantage after 15 minutes of play.
Stevenson responded with its big second quarter, when it outshot the Bullets 18-5 and won all six face-offs. Kenny Whitaker tied it with 9:24 to go before Dashiell potted back-to-back tallies 2:12 apart to make it 4-2 with 3:30 on the clock. Reid scored with 1:22 left before Lea converted man-up with 24 ticks showing as the Mustangs took a 6-2 lead into the locker room.
Gettysburg outscored Stevenson 3-1 to start the third quarter and twice pulled to within two. Junior long-stick midfielder
Ian Casella connected in transition with 13:17 remaining before Maddux converted a dish from senior
Caldwell Rohrbach to make it 6-4 with 10:32 left.
After a Lea goal with 8:24 to go, junior
Evan Thomas took a pass from Maddux and blasted in a shot from the right wing to make it 7-5. But the Mustangs answered with the final two goals of the quarter, as Reid and Michael Crowe scored 2:38 apart to set the score at 9-5 after three quarters of play.
The hosts extended their advantage to 10-5 with 9:33 remaining on Lea's third goal of the night. Maddux made it a four-goal game with his wraparound tally from the left post with 7:42 left on a pass taking a dish from freshman Jack Harvanzski. It was his 28th goal of the season – the most by a Bullet freshman since Joe Brody '10 scored 36 in 2007. But Stephen Banick answered less than two minutes later for Stevenson, and Reid and Dashiel scored the game's final two goals.
