Bullets, Crusaders Meet in High-Flying Rematch

Teams Have Racked up 222 Points in Last Two Meetings

OPENING KICK
The Bullets (3-0, 2-0 CC), leading Division III in rushing offense for the second week in a row, put their perfect record on the line as they visit Susquehanna University (1-2, 0-2 CC) for a Centennial Conference tilt on Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Lopardo Stadium. Saturday's game marks the first meeting between the two teams at Susquehanna since a scoreless tie in 1903.

QUICK HITS
1. The Bullets are 3-0 for the first time since 1987, when Gettysburg started the season 6-0. They are also 2-0 in Centennial Conference play for the first time since 1996.
2. The last two meetings between Gettysburg and Susquehanna have featured a combined total of 222 points and 2,285 yards of offense. The Bullets rallied for a 61-50 victory in 2010 before Susquehanna won 56-55 in overtime last season.

SERIES HISTORY
Gettysburg leads Susquehanna 5-3-1 in the all-time series that dates back to 1897. After meeting in 1922, the two sides did not play again until 2010, when the Crusaders joined the Centennial Conference an associate member in football.

LAST TIME OUT
Juniata scored on its opening drive, but Gettysburg halted the Eagles on their final 10 possessions en route to a 28-7 Bullet victory Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. Senior quarterback Kody Smith accounted for three touchdowns for Gettysburg, throwing for 181 yards and a touchdown on 11-of-18 passing while rushing for 58 yards and two TDs. Senior defensive tackle Ben Zepnick and freshman linebacker Kodie McNamara made eight tackles apiece for Gettysburg, marking a career-high for both, while junior linebacker Cody DiAmore contributed six hits and an interception to end Juniata's final drive, picking off a pass deep in Bullet territory. Junior cornerback Hugo Nolasco added a career-high three pass breakups.

Susquehanna dropped to 0-2 in the Centennial Conference with a 17-14 loss at Dickinson last Saturday. The Crusaders never led and trailed 17-7 after three quarters of play. Susquehanna pulled to within a field goal when sophomore Taylor Kolmer connected with senior Mike Ritter on a 21-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, but Dickinson stopped the Crusaders on their final three possessions. Senior Connor McGrath rushed for 102 yards on 22 carries for Susquehanna while Ritter finished with 73 yards. Sophomore linebacker Mike Statuti made 11 tackles while senior safety Jalon Scott finished with 10 stops.

LAST YEAR'S MATCHUP
Susquehanna scored 11 unanswered points to send the game to overtime, then won on a game-ending two-point conversion in the first OT as the Bullets dropped a 56-55 shootout in Gettysburg. The Bullets led 48-37 with 9:56 left before the Crusaders rallied, kicking a field goal before tying it on a touchdown and two-point conversion. In overtime, the Bullets received possession first and scored on a Ted Delia 1-yard touchdown run before kicking an extra point. Susquehanna answered with a 25-yard touchdown pass on its first play before winning on a conversion pass. Delia rushed for a career-high 244 yards and three touchdowns while returning a punt 66 yards for a touchdown. Wing Freddy Caruso added seven catches for 116 yards while Kody Smith passed for 183 yards and rushed for an additional 82 yards and tow touchdowns. Gettysburg outgained Susquehanna 569-554, and the two teams tied the Centennial Conference record for combined points they set one year earlier. Rich Palazzi passed for 430 yards for Susquehanna.

AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS
Along with their NCAA Division III-leading average in rushing (381.3), the Bullets are also ranked highly in numerous other categories. Their two kickoff returns have averaged a nation-leading 58.0 yards, and they are also fourth in total offense (549.7 ypg), seventh in scoring defense (4.7 ppg), 11th in scoring offense (48.7 ppg), 12th in rushing defense (49.3 ypg), 15th in total defense (215.7 ypg), tied for 30th in tackles for loss (8.7 tflpg), 31st in sacks (3.33 spg), 36th in sacks allowed (1.00 spg), and 49th in passing efficiency. Individually, senior tailback Ted Delia is tied for fifth in points per game (16.0) while junior Tommy LeNoir is 38th in punt return average (10.1 ypr). In addition, senior quarterback Kody Smith ranks 39th in passing efficiency (156.05).

THE GETTYSBURG OFFENSE
Gettysburg's rushing game has carried the offense thus far, accounting for 16 of the team's 21 touchdowns and nearly 70 percent of its total yards. The Bullets features two of the top-four rushers in the Centennial Conference in senior tailback Ted Delia, who ranks third with 94.3 yards per game and eight touchdowns, and senior quarterback Kody Smith, who is fourth with 73.7 yards per game and three TDs. Smith has also passed for 165.7 yards per game, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. Junior receiver Aden Twer has made six catches for 63.0 yards per game and a touchdown while junior wideout Kyle Davis has also caught six passes for 35.7 yards per game and two TDs.

THE GETTYSBURG DEFENSE
The defense has allowed just 14 points thus far, the fewest in program history over the first three games since 1986, when the Bullets yielded only seven points in their first three. They have been particularly effective against the run, allowing only 49.3 yards rushing per game. Senior linebacker Larry DelViscio is tops on the team with 26 tackles while freshman linebacker Kodie McNamara is second with 20 tackles. Senior defensive end Joe Ventresca has totaled 3.5 tackles for loss, including 2.5 sacks of the team's 10 sacks. Senior defensive end Chris Nolan has made 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks while senior defensive tackle Ben Zepnick has contributed 2.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks.

THE GETTYSBURG SPECIAL TEAMS
The Gettysburg kicking game has been largely handled by freshman Robby Fay, who has seen action on extra points, kickoffs, and punts. He is 16-for-19 on PATs and in his collegiate debut at punter, averaged 38.4 yards on four attempts against Juniata. Junior Tommy LeNoir has taken eight of the team's 10 punt returns for an average of 10.1 yards per return.

SCOUTING SUSQUEHANNA
The Crusaders are seeking their first victory since opening the season with a 37-21 win over Merchant Marine. Susquehanna has used four different quarterbacks over its first three games, with Mark Rosenbaum seeing the majority of the snaps, throwing for 254 yards and a pair of touchdowns. However, sophomore Taylor Kolmer is listed as the starter on the team's depth chart for this week after passing for 108 yards and a touchdown against Dickinson last week. The team's biggest offensive threat is senior receiver Mike Ritter, a First Team All-Centennial Conference selection in 2010 who has caught 15 passes for 167 yards and three TDs this season. Connor McGrath has added 59.0 rushing yards per game. The Crusaders lead the conference in turnover margin (+5) after forcing eight turnovers in their first three outings. Defensively, Jack McCarty and Adrian Bernard have made 26 tackles apiece.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior quarterback Kody Smith was honored for his performance in the Bullets' victory over Juniata, capturing Centennial Conference Offensive Co-Player of the Week honors. He accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) and 238 total yards. It was Smith's second career Centennial Conference POW award; he first captured the honor after his first career start, a 57-35 win over Franklin & Marshall in the 2010 season finale.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION
In the first American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III Top-25 Coaches' Poll of the season, the Bullets received one vote. Gettysburg was one of four Centennial Conference schools to appear in the poll; Johns Hopkins was ranked No. 16 while Muhlenberg (10 votes) and Franklin & Marshall (four votes) were also recognized.

THE COACHES
Gettysburg is coached by Barry Streeter, now in his 34th year at the helm of the Bullets. With 170 career victories, Streeter is 10th among active Division III coaches in wins. He is also 24th on the all-time Division III coaches win list. Streeter, who owns a career record of 169-162-5, is Gettysburg's all-time winningest and longest-tenured football coach in program history. In addition, his 100 Centennial Conference football wins are second in conference history.

Steve Briggs is in the midst of his 23rd season as head coach of the Crusaders. With a career record of 125-111, he is the winningest and longest-tenured coach in program history.
