GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Trey Kavanaugh has been named offensive coordinator on the Gettysburg football staff, head coach
Michael Green announced on Thursday.
Kavanaugh, who will have charge of the offensive and oversee the quarterback room, is Green's first hire on the offensive side as he continues to assemble his new staff for the 2026 season.
Hired on Jan. 13 as the Bullets' 27th head football coach, Green rounds out his coordinator-level staffing after recently hiring
Zach Mallard to lead the defense and
Shawn Magginson, who has charge of the special teams.
"We are excited to welcome Coach Kavanaugh to the Bullets football program as our offensive coordinator," Green said. "He will be a strong mentor of our student-athletes and positive driver of our culture. Our offense will be in good hands under his leadership. I look forward to working alongside Trey as we build the new era of Bullets Football!"
Kavanaugh joins the Bullets staff after spending the last two years at Division II Wingate, where he was quarterback coach and video coordinator. Working closely with the offensive coordinator, he coordinated pass game strategies and developed the scouting reports.
"I'm incredibly grateful to be joining Coach Green's staff at Gettysburg College as the offensive coordinator," Kavanaugh said. "The pride, passion, and support I witnessed throughout the interview process made it clear that the foundation is in place for building a successful and consistent football program. Offensively, we're going to be in alignment with team goals by being balanced, physical, and intentional – centered on getting the ball to our best playmakers, dictating tempo, and creating explosive plays. Go Bullets!"
At Wingate, he helped the Bulldogs to the South Atlantic Conference championship in 2024 and back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances. He also mentored All-Piedmont quarterback Brooks Bentley in 2024.
Prior to Wingate, Kavanaugh coached two seasons as assistant quarterback coach at his alma mater, Appalachian State. While there, he coached Chase Brice, a current quarterback in the CFL, during the 2022 season. Brice led the Sun Belt in touchdown passes and set a program record for touchdown passes in a game with six against North Carolina. In 2023, Kavanaugh coached Joey Aguilar, the 2023 Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year, who set program records in passing touchdowns, passing yards and total offense.
Prior to his time at App State, Kavanaugh was the head football coach at Cuthbertson High School from 2019-21. In final season, he led the Cavaliers to a 4A third-round state playoff appearance.
"Trey is a great coach and even better person," Wingate Director of Athletics Joe Reich, a 1987 Gettysburg graduate who played football for the Bullets, said. "We, at Wingate University, will certainly miss him and are disappointed to lose him but I am excited for Gettysburg, my alma mater, to be getting such a high-quality coach. Go Bullets!"
Kavanaugh comes from a strong family background in football. His grandfather is hall of fame coach Jerry Moore, who coached at North Texas (1979-80), Texas Tech (1981-85) and Appalachian State (1989-2012) and had a career record of 242-135-2.
Kavanaugh played his first two collegiate seasons for his grandfather and graduated from Appalachian State in 2025 with a bachelor of science in health education.
Gettysburg opens the 2026 season at Juniata on Sept. 5.
