BALTIMORE, Md. – Scoring has been at a premium between Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins on the soccer pitch over the last two seasons as the two teams posted a scoreless draw for the second consecutive year in Centennial Conference men's soccer action Thursday night.
Gettysburg (3-4-1, 0-2-1 CC) out-shot Johns Hopkins (3-4-1, 1-1-1 CC) 5-3 in the opening half with a pair of attempts on goal. Senior
Craig Heckman's header was stopped by Blue Jay goalie Nick Cerrone in the 11th minute, while Cerrone stonewalled junior
Brooks Taylor in the 38th minute.
The Bullets defense held Johns Hopkins without a shot on goal until the 67th minute when Mark Spencer's attempt was controlled by junior
Connor Darrell. The hosts managed the only shots in the final 20 minutes of play with both attempts sailing wide.
Gettysburg came up empty on a pair of shots in the first overtime period, while Darrell kicked off the final extra session with his second save on a shot by Matt Dunne. Junior
James Rice took the final attempt by either team at breaking up the tie, but his shot was saved by Cerrone in the 107th minute.
Gettysburg finished with a 13-12 lead in shots, while Johns Hopkins led in corner kicks 8-3.
The Bullets and Blue Jays have not scored against one another in the regular season since the third minute of the 2010 meeting.
Junior
Andrew Bellis led the Bullets with three shots, while Heckman and sophomore
Will Gately each tallied two attempts.
Gettysburg hosts Dickinson College on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m.
