Box Score

BALTIMORE – The Centennial Conference Women's Soccer Championship semifinals came to an epic conclusion on Friday at Johns Hopkins University's Homewood Field as Haverford College clipped Gettysburg College 5-3 in a penalty-kick shootout to advance to Saturday's championship match against the hosts.

Gettysburg (12-2-4) and Haverford (10-2-6) played to a scoreless draw following regulation and two overtime periods. In the best-of-five penalty-kick shootout, the Bullets answered the Fords' first three makes. Following Haverford's fourth tally, Ford goalie Robin Chernow knocked down junior Georgia Ferguson's (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) shot to set the stage for Kristin Hasselgren. Hasselgren booted the ball into the top left corner to send Haverford into the title match for the second year in a row.

Friday's affair was a defensive struggle. Gettysburg forced the action early with a pair of shots by junior Brigid Behan (Newport, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) and Ferguson saved by Chernow.

Haverford answered by challenging sophomore goalie Eliza Gray (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) beginning in the 28th minute. The second-year keeper was ready, making the first of her four first-half saves on a shot by Phoebe Miller.

The Fords went on the attack early in the second period with a flurry of shots. Haverford fired off six shots in the first eight minutes of the stanza with Gray turning away all three attempts that were on goal.

Gettysburg's defense recovered quickly and kept the Fords from any more open looks at the cage for the remainder of the half. Haverford's defense was equally good, holding the Bullets to just a pair of long attempts by Behan on goal. Chernow corralled both kicks to help send the match to overtime.

Following a save by Gray in the first overtime period, Haverford had a prime opportunity to end the match in front of the cage. A cross from the right side touched off Gray's hands to the middle of the box, but Mariah Baker's shot went over the cage with 27 seconds left in the frame.

Both teams failed to take advantage of corner kicks in the second overtime period, while Gray tied her career high with her ninth save of the match in the 109th minute.

Haverford finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.

Gettysburg added to the program record for shutouts in a season with its 13th this fall. The previous record was 11 set in 2004.

The NCAA will announce the field for the national playoffs on Monday, Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m. on NCAA.com. Gettysburg will hope to make the national field for the first time since 2004 as an at-large selection.
