Box Score

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Freshman Jameson Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) scored the game-winning goal off an assist from classmate Tim Murphy (Darien, Conn./Darien) with 2:01 left in overtime and the 10th-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team survived a furious second-half rally to beat previously-undefeated Eastern University 12-11 Friday afternoon in a non-conference tilt.

For the second year in a row against Eastern, sophomore Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) scored six goals, tying his career high. He also set career-bests in points (seven) and ground balls (eight).

Smith finished with two goals and two assists while junior Martin Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) notched two goals and one assist. Sophomore Jack Harvazinski (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) added one goal and one helper for Gettysburg (4-2), which had an assist on nine of its 12 goals.

Senior long-stick midfielder Ian Casella (Washington, Mass./Avon Old Farms [Conn.]) turned in a big defensive performance, posting seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior goalie J.T. McCook (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) made eight saves while classmate Nick Avedisian (Laytonsville, Md./The Bullis School) finished 11-for-24 on face-offs and picked up eight ground balls.

The Bullets have now played in three-straight one goal games, all of which have ended in a 12-11 verdict.

Eric Waibel paced Eastern (4-1) with three goals while Aaron Benz made 16 saves.

The Bullets led 10-4 early in the second half, only to see the Eagles end regulation on a 7-1 run. Eastern outscored the Gettysburg 4-0 in the fourth quarter, tying it on a Will Johnson goal with 3:56 left. The Eagles appeared to have taken the lead with 1:51 on the clock, but a goal was called off due to a crease violation.

Eastern won the overtime face-off, but sophomore Nick Alibrandi (Fort Salonga, N.Y./St. Anthony's) caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball near midfield. Alibrandi then withstood several hard checks clearing the ball upfield, maintaining possession and allowing the Bullets to call timeout with 2:30 showing.

Twenty-nine seconds later, Murphy passed the ball down to Smith in front of the cage, who delivered a low shot from the doorstep as Gettysburg won its third straight overtime contest dating back to the 2011 season.

Gettysburg then outscored Eastern 5-3 in the second quarter to head into the locker room leading 8-4. Maddux struck three times in the stanza while Manilla and Smith also found paydirt.

The Bullets tacked on two quick goals at the start of the second half, receiving a man-down goal from Harvazinski and a man-up tally from senior Evan Thomas (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) to assume its six-goal lead with 13:10 on the clock. The Eagles answered with three straight goals before Maddux added another man-down goal for Gettysburg with 1:42 on the clock, making it 11-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

Prior to last season's game with Eastern, no Bullet had scored six goals since 2003; since then, Maddux has achieved the feat twice while sophomore Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) also scored six against Goucher this season.
