Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Senior J.T. McCook (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) made a career-high 18 saves, but 10th-ranked Salisbury University handed 15th-ranked Gettysburg its first loss of the season, 8-5, on Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium.

Salisbury outscored Gettysburg 5-2 in the second quarter to open up a 7-4 halftime advantage, and the two teams combined for just two goals in the second half of the non-conference outing.

Gettysburg (2-1) received two goals and one assist from sophomore Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) while senior Bobby DeWees (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) tallied one goal and one assist.

It was the third career 15-save game for McCook, whose previous career-high of 16 came in the team's 10-7 win over Haverford College in the 2011 Centennial Conference semifinals.

Wade Korvin led Salisbury (2-2), the two-time defending Division III national champions, with two goals and one assist while Tyler Granelli won 12-of-16 face-offs. Alex Taylor finished with seven saves for the Sea Gulls.

Salisbury, which held a 41-25 shot advantage, never trailed after scoring the first two goals of the afternoon. But the Bullets answered with a pair of unassisted tallies at the end of the first quarter, with Firouzan scoring with 4:32 left and senior Evan Thomas (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) knotting the score with 1:43 showing.

The Gulls opened up some breathing room with 4-0 run over the opening 5:46 of the second quarter, with Korvin scoring three times during the stretch. Sophomore Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) stemmed the rally when he struck off a feed from freshman Tim Murphy (Darien, Conn./Darien) with 6:27 left in the half, but Salisbury answered with 2:01 remaining. However, DeWees pulled the Bullets to within three again when he converted man-up off a Firouzan dish with 18 seconds left.

Salisbury scored the only goal of the third quarter with 4:10 left. The Bullets blanked the hosts in the fourth quarter, outshooting the Gulls 9-7, but could only muster one goal, when DeWees set up Firouzan in another man-up situation with 6:24 to go.

The Bullets return to action next Saturday, when they host third-ranked Lynchburg College at 1 p.m.
