Jameson Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) dished out five assists as the 12th-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team defeated Haverford College 12-5 in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Gettysburg (5-2, 1-0 CC), which outscored the Fords 9-2 over the final three quarters, also received two goals and two assists from junior
Martin Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and two goals apiece from sophomore
Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's), sophomore
Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), and junior
Derek Ruebling (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton). Senior
Bobby DeWees (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington) added one goal and one assist.
Also enjoying a strong defensive performance was sophomore
Alex Lanza (Cross River, N.Y./Jay), who registered five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Senior
Nick Avedisian (Laytonsville, Md./Bullis School) won 12-of-20 face-offs.
Jack Bodine scored two goals for Haverford (3-4, 0-1), which outshot the Bullets 37-32. Eric Caliendo made five saves for the Fords.
The Bullets never trailed after scoring the game's first two goals, with Firouzan and Manilla striking in the opening 3:30. Haverford answered with a pair of tallies but Thomas, who posted career-highs in goals and points, put the hosts back on top when he scored in a man-up situation with 4:06 left in the quarter. Jake Maldonado answered with 3:20 left to tie it at 3-3 heading into the second period.
Gettysburg outscored Haverford 3-0 second quarter, including back-to-back markers from Ruebling midway through the quarter. Then with the ball at their end of the field, the Bullets called a timeout with 19 seconds left, and with six ticks showing Firouzan found the back of the net to put his team up 6-3 at the intermission.
Maddux capped a 4-0 Bullet run when he scored with 11:28 to go in the third quarter. DeWees got into the action with a man-up goal at the 7:48 mark before Thomas went back-to-back, with his second tally making it 10-5 with 16 seconds showing in the quarter.
Manilla and Maddux scored in the opening 3:22 of the fourth quarter to set the final score.
Gettysburg returns home on Wednesday, when it hosts Widener University at 3:30 p.m. in its final non-conference game of the regular season.
