GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team went the distance for the third consecutive match to start the 2013 campaign, bouncing back from an 0-2 deficit to take down Rutgers-Camden to start the final day of its own Battlefield Classic. The Bullets ran out of gas in the finale against Salisbury University, falling in three sets to the Sea Gulls.
Gettysburg (2-2) defeated Rutgers-Camden (0-4) 18-25, 24-26, 25-12, 25-22, and 15-13. Salisbury (4-0) completed a perfect weekend at the classic with 25-15, 25-7, and 25-21 decisions over the hosts.
On Friday, Gettysburg rebounded from a two-set hole to take down Penn State Altoona before falling in five to Bridgewater College. A sluggish start on Saturday saw the Bullets staring at another 0-2 deficit to Rutgers-Camden with the Scarlet Raptors scoring each of the final four points in the second set.
Gettysburg bounced back in a big way in the third set, knocking down 15-of-23 attack attempts without an error (.652 attack percentage) to grab the upper-hand. The hosts jumped out to early leads in each of the final two sets to secure the victory.
Sophomore Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples) led the charge with a career-high 17 kills. Senior Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) added 11 kills without an error, while freshmen Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albermarle) and Hannah Dallman (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) knocked down nine and seven kills, respectively. Sophomore Courtney Morrow (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) posted six kills and had a hand in seven of Gettysburg's nine team blocks in the contest.
Senior Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) put together an impressive stat line with four kills, 42 assists, seven aces, and 11 digs. Sophomore Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) led the defensive effort with 13 digs.
The exhausted Bullets closed against a much fresher Salisbury squad, which swept each of its four matches at the tournament. Grevers paced the team with six kills and was named to the Battlefield Classic All-Tournament Team. Kuhn chipped in with 22 assists and five digs and Bentz posted two aces and eight digs.
Gettysburg travels to the Juniata College ASICS Invitational on Sept. 6-7. The Bullets open the tournament against Saint Vincent College on Friday at 6 p.m.
