Football Visits Juniata Seeking First CC Win

OPENING KICK
Gettysburg seeks its first Centennial Conference victory of the year as it visits the Juniata College Eagles on Saturday at 1 p.m.. The Bullets (1-1, 0-1 CC) are coming off a 41-23 loss to Ursinus College in its conference opener last week while Juniata is 2-0 and 1-0 in conference play after going on the road to beat Dickinson College 37-14 in Centennial lid-lifter.

1. The Bullets have piled up over 400 yards of offense in each of their first two games - including 722 in their season-opener at Misericordia - and are 12th in Division III in total offense (569.5 ypg).

SERIES HISTORY
Gettysburg leads Juniata 19-8 in the all-time series that began in 1923. The Bullets have won the last seven meetings, and the Eagles last series victory was a 28-14 win at Gettysburg on Sept. 29, 1979.

LAST TIME OUT
Ursinus scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and hand the Bullets a 41-23 loss in Gettysburg's Centennial Conference opener last Saturday. The Bullets pulled to within 20-17 with 4:02 remaining in the third quarter following a 62-yard touchdown pass from junior Zach Miiller to senior receiver Aden Twer before the Bears' decisive run. Ursinus took advantage of three Gettysburg turnovers, converting them into 17 points. Sophomore tailback Kyle Wigley, making his first career start, rushed for 128 yards and one touchdown while Miller threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns on 15-of-26 passing. Twer made three receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns while sophomore cornerback Brian Calatozzo paced the defense with a pair of interceptions.

Juniata raced out to a 27-0 second-quarter lead and never looked back, handing Dickinson a 37-14 defeat in Carlisle last Saturday. Senior quarterback Ward Udinski passed for 295 yards and a touchdown while rushing for an additional 53 yards and two TDs. The Eagles outgained the Red Devils 504-279, finishing with over 200 yards in both rushing and passing. Senior linebacker Greg Nixon led the Juniata defense with 13 tackles. Junior Ken Kysor was 3-for-4 on field goals, including a 36- and 38-yarder, and 4-for-4 on extra points to earn Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

RECORD BREAKER
With his two touchdown catches against Ursinus, senior receiver Aden Twer broke Gettysburg's oldest major football record. His 4-yard grab with 4:06 left upped his career total for TD receptions to 19 - one more than Ken Snyder '65 accumulated from 1962-64, when freshmen were not eligible for varsity competition. Twer also had a 62-yard touchdown catch earlier in the game. Two years ago, Twer also broke Snyder's single-season touchdown reception record that had stood since 1964 when he made 12 TD catches.

LAST YEAR'S MATCHUP
Juniata scored on its opening drive, but Gettysburg halted the Eagles on their final 10 possessions en route to a 28-7 victory at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. Quarterback Kody Smith '13 accounted for three touchdowns for Gettysburg, throwing for 181 yards and a touchdown on 11-of-18 passing while rushing for 58 yards and two TDs. Defensive tackle Ben Zepnick '13 and linebacker Kodie McNamara made eight tackles apiece for Gettysburg while linebacker Cody DiAmore contributed six hits and an interception to end Juniata's final drive. Cornerback Hugo Nolasco added three pass breakups. Quarterback Ward Udinski passed for 222 yards and rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown to lead the Eagles.

AMONG THE NATIONAL LEADERS
The Bullets enter Saturday's game ranked among the leaders in Division III in numerous categories, including total offense (12th, 569.5 ypg), rushing offense (16th, 294.5 ypg), scoring offense (26th, 42.5 ppg), pass efficiency (26th, 173.75), third-down conversions (15th, 56.5 percent), fewest penalties (23rd, 4.00 per game), and kick returns (23rd, 28.3 ypr). Individually, sophomore linebacker Kodie McNamara ranks fourth in tackles per game (15.0) while sophomore tailback Kyle Wigley is 15th in rushing (155.0 ypg), junior Matt Perkins is 17th in field goals per game (1.5), sophomore cornerback Brian Calatozzo is 18th in interceptions per game (1.0), and junior quarterback Zach Miller is 22nd in pass efficiency (173.8), 33rd in total offense (327.5 ypg), and 45th in passing (275.0 ypg). In addition, senior wing Tommy LeNoir checks in at 28th in kickoff returns (28.7 ypr) and 48th in punt returns (8.0 ypr).

THE GETTYSBURG OFFENSE
Gettysburg's offense has achieved incredible balance in the early going, averaging just under 15 yards per game more on the ground (292.0) than in the air (277.5). Wigley leads the team with 152.0 rushing yards per game and a pair of touchdowns while Miller has added 53.0 yards per game on the ground. Junior tailback Nick Ulassin has added 52.5 yards per outing and three touchdowns. Miller has also completed over 60 percent of his passes and has thrown for 277.5 yards per game to go with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Junior wing Fred Caruso leads the receiving corps with seven catches for 144 yards and a touchdown while senior receiver Aden Twer has added six receptions - three of which have gone for touchdowns - and 90.5 yards per game.

THE GETTYSBURG DEFENSE
Sophomore linebacker Kodie McNamara has paced Gettysburg's defense with 30 tackles while senior linebacker Cody DiAmore has added 21 hits. Sophomore cornerback Brian Calatozzo ranks third on the team with 17 tackles and leads the Bullets with two interceptions. Sophomore safety Michael Kornegay and freshman linebacker Michael Pennella have contributed 16 and 15 stops, respectively.

THE GETTYSBURG SPECIAL TEAMS
LeNoir, Twer, and Perkins have enjoyed strong starts to lead the special teams. LeNoir has averaged 8.0 yards on three punt returns along with 28.7 yards per kickoff reutrn, including a 67-yarder. Twer has contributed two kickoff returns for an average of 32.5 yards while Perkins has converted 8-of-9 extra points and 3-of-4 field goals.

SCOUTING JUNIATA
The Eagles have enjoyed an outstanding start to their season passing the ball, as senior Ward Udinski has thrown for 317.0 yards per game, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. The team's leading receivers are junior receiver Isaiah Slutter, who has made 11 receptions for 82.0 yards per game and a touchdown, and freshman Aaron O'Brien, who has caught seven passes for 80.5 yards per game along with a TD. Udinski is also the team's leading rusher, averaging 55.0 yards per game and scoring four touchdowns, while Michael John has added 52.0 yards per game and a TD on the ground. Senior linebacker Greg Nixon has paced the defense, making a team-leading 25 tackles, including 3.0 for loss, and a sack. Senior ilnebacker Kevin Gorman and senior lineman Brandon Felus have added 3.0 sacks apiece. Jonah Plymire has averaged 39.7 yards per punt while juior Ken Kysor has connected on 9-of-10 extra points and 3-of-4 field goals to lead the special teams unit.

THE COACHES
Gettysburg is coached by Barry Streeter, now in his 35th year at the helm of the Bullets. With 175 career victories, Streeter is eighth among active Division III coaches in wins. He is also 21st on the all-time Division III coaches win list. Streeter, who owns a career record of 175-166-5, is Gettysburg's all-time winningest and longest-tenured football coach in program history. In addition, his 105 Centennial Conference football wins are second in conference history.

Tim Launtz is in his third season as the Eagles head coach. He was an assistant coach at Juniata for 15 years prior to becoming head coach, and he graduated from the college in 1980.
