Bullets Capture OT Thriller on Senior Day

DePontes Scores Game-Winner

KJ DePontes' game-winning goal lifted the Bullets over Washington.
Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) scored the game-winning goal 2:28 into overtime, lifting the Gettysburg College men's soccer team to a 3-2 Centennial Conference (CC) victory over Washington College on Senior Day at Clark Field Saturday afternoon.

DePontes and senior Kyle Franks (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) finished with one goal and one assist apiece for the Bullets (9-5-1, 2-4-1 CC), who survived an 87th-minute goal from the Shoremen that forced OT.

Gettysburg's four seniors were honored in a brief ceremony before the start of the match.

Franks delivered a corner kick from the right side that was headed by a defender but recovered by DePontes, who ripped in a shot inside the right post for his fifth goal of the season. The corner was set up by a looping shot from DePontes that leaping Washington goalie Lin Robinson punched out of the air and over the goal line.

In an evenly-played match, the Bullets held a 13-11 shot advantage though Washington posted a 9-6 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman Max Karen (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) made three saves for Gettysburg to earn his first career Centennial Conference victory while Lin Robinson stopped seven shots for the Shoremen (5-9-1, 0-6-1 CC).

Gettysburg never trailed after sophomore Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the ninth minute, taking a feed from DePontes in transition and slanting a shot past Robinson inside the left post. Smith has now scored the most goals by a Bullet since 2008, when Chris Bayon '09 scored nine and Eric Hynes '12 had seven.

The Shoremen tied it up just over three minutes later, however, on a header off a corner kick by Bob Libera.

It remained a 1-1 match until the 71st minute, when Smith was tackled at the top of the box to give the Bullets a free kick. Franks followed up with his second career goal, burying a shot into the lower-left corner of the net to make it a 2-1 match.

Washington converted off another header to pull even when Joseph Fili scored with 3:20 left. But Karen made a save with less than two minutes left, and the Bullets would go on to record their first overtime victory of the season.

Gettysburg wraps up its regular season with a pair of road matches and visits sixth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
