Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Tori Sankey (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) posted a pair of goals and freshman
Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) logged 16 saves, but Gettysburg's upset bid of No. 5 Franklin & Marshall fell short 3-2 in Centennial Conference field hockey action at Shirk Field Tuesday evening.
Franklin & Marshall (15-1, 8-1 CC) earned its seventh-straight victory thanks to a hat trick by junior Maria Guarisco. After being denied by Mowery twice in the opening 20 minutes, Guarisco bounced a shot past the Gettysburg (4-11, 2-7 CC) defenders for the game's first score in the 23rd minute.
Mowery kept the Diplomats off the board with four saves over the next seven minutes and an offensive opportunity for the hosts arose shortly after. Following a penalty corner, sophomore
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) fired a shot at the goal. The shot was knocked down by goalie Allie Morey, but the ball trickled through the keeper's feet to Sankey who knocked it inside the left post at 33:58.
Franklin & Marshall managed to grab the lead just before the break as a hot shot by Tamara Mills from the right side was deflected into the cage by Guarisco with 13 seconds remaining in the half.
The Diplomats continued to hold the edge on the offensive end, firing shot-after-shot at Mowery to no effect. The freshman goalie picked up four saves in the first 12 minutes of the final stanza. Meanwhile, Sankey struck again, sending a tip pass from sophomore
Samantha Wright (Darien, Conn./Darien) into the top of the cage to tie the game at 46:14.
Guarisco once again pressed deep into Gettysburg territory and dribbled past several defenders on the way to knocking in the eventual game-winner and her 19th goal of the season with less than 16 minutes remaining.
Mowery kept the deficit at one with four saves over the final time, including three consecutive stops on shots by Sarah Powell in the 55th minute. The Bullets were kept in check offensively by the Diplomat defense and went without a shot over the final 23 minutes.
Franklin & Marshall finished with a 31-4 edge in shots and an 11-2 edge in penalty corners.
Gettysburg caps the season at home against Johns Hopkins University (7-8, 4-4 CC) on Friday, Oct. 31, at 3:30 p.m.
