ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore
Joey Bragg (Bird in Hand, Pa./Conestoga Valley) did not get an opportunity to wrestle in a dual match last season due to injury, but the heavyweight made the most of his dual debut with a victory-clinching pin to lift Gettysburg College past Elizabethtown College 25-19 on Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (1-0) jumped out to a 19-7 lead at Elizabethtown (0-1), but the Blue Jays pulled even with two decisions and a pin before the final bout. Bragg surrendered an early takedown near the edge of the mat to Steven Paul, but the sophomore turned a reversal out of the down position on the ensuing restart. It didn't take long for Bragg to work Paul's shoulders to the mat for the pin at 1:37.
The Bullet first-years set the stage for the victory with wins at three of the first four weight classes.
Noah Malamut (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep) scored a first-period pin (1:52) at 125, while
Jake Bracken (Chatsworth, calif./Harward-Westlake School) turned in a major decision (21-13) in a high-scoring affair against Nick Virgilio at 141 pounds.
After falling behind in his match against Chad Lammer, freshman
Quinn Merrigan (Canton, Mass./Canton) came back with a pin with 52 seconds left at 149 to push the advantage to 16-3.
Senior
Pat Thomas (Jamesport, N.Y./Riverhead) turned in a solid outing at 165, allowing only an escape to Jordan Moser in a 7-1 victory.
Gettysburg receives a 10-day lay-off before its next outing at the McDaniel College Duals on Nov. 22. Opening matches start at 12 p.m.
