Box Score
ST MARY'S CITY, Md. – Gettysburg carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, but that's when host St. Mary's College scored all six of its runs as the Bullets dropped their season opener by a score of 6-3 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference baseball affair.
Junior
Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) went 2-for-5 at the plate for Gettysburg while senior
Al Posch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) singled to stretch his hitting streak to 29 games, dating back to last season.
Senior
Drew Felsenthal (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley), who was charged with the loss, started on the mound and was in control early on, limiting St. Mary's (5-3) to four singles and walk over the first five frames. But the Seahawks took advantage of five Gettysburg walks and an error against two different pitchers in the sixth. St. Mary's loaded the bases with no outs before tying the game at 2-2 on a fielder's choice and a double steal. After Felsenthal's second walk of the inning put runners on first and second, he was relieved by junior
Eric Hungerford (New Preston, Conn./Shepaug Valley).
The Bullets were an out from escaping the inning when Hungerford induced a fielder's choice. But the Seahawks would draw three consecutive walks, with the second two forcing in a run, and an error allowed two more runs to score, making it 6-2. He would go on to retire five of the six batters he faced over his last two innings.
Gettysburg added an unearned run in the ninth, when senior
Patrick O'Grady (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) reached on an error before scoring on a fielder's choice.
The Bullets scored both of their runs in the third inning. Senior
Cam MacDonald (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) led off with a walk and was bunted to second by classmate
Austin Davis (New York, N.Y./Riverdale Country School) before Karagjozi loaded the bases with an infield single. Posch and senior
Nate Simon (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Abington Friends School) would go on to stroke RBI-singles to make it 2-0.
St. Mary's starter Michael O'Neill (2-0) earned the win, working six innings and allowing two runs on five hits and four walks, before three relievers came on to throw an inning apiece.
Gettysburg is scheduled to visit Stevenson University on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in another non-conference outing before embarking on its Spring Break trip to Fort Myers, Fla. on March 9-15.
