Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Senior Jon Maddalone (Carolina Beach, N.C./Choate Rosemary Hall [Conn.]) made a career-high 23 saves, but the 20th-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team fell by a count of 13-8 at fifth-ranked Washington College in a Centennial Conference tilt Saturday afternoon.

The Centennial Conference-leading Shoremen (12-1, 7-0 CC), who pulled away by outscoring the Bullets 4-1 in the fourth quarter, snapped a 15-game losing streak to Gettysburg, topping the Bullets for the first time since the 2004 NCAA Division III Tournament.

Junior Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) led the Bullets offensively, scoring three goals and handing out one assist. Senior Derek Ruebling (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton), junior Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's), and senior Martin Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) all added one goal and one assist.

Maddalone, facing a 60-shot barrage, recorded the most saves by a Bullet since Andrew Barter '00 stopped 25 shots in a 12-8 win over Washington on April 18, 1999.

Firouzan scored less than two minutes into the game to give Gettysburg (8-5, 4-2 CC) a 1-0 lead, but Washington answered with three goals in less than two minutes, and the Shoremen would not trail the rest of the way.

The Bullets trailed just 4-3 at the end of the first quarter following another goal from Firouzan and a Maddux tally. But Washington opened up some breathing room when it outscored Gettysburg 4-1 in the second quarter to assume an 8-4 halftime advantage. Firouzan scored his third goal of the game with 4:05 left in the period.

Junior defensive midfielder Nick Alibrandi (Fort Salonga, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored to make it an 8-5 game with 10:45 on the third-quarter clock before Washington answered with 6:54 showing. But the Bullets struck twice late in the period, as Manilla scored with 2:10 remaining and junior Brendan Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) struck with one second left to make it 9-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Grant Hughes scored his fourth and final goal of the game for the Shoremen with 9:35 remaining before Ruebling converted in a man-up situation to make it 10-8 with 8:38 left. But the Shoremen ended the game on a 3-0 run.

JD Campbell also scored four goals for Washington while Michael Trapp won 17-of-23 face-offs. Ted DiSalvo made eight saves for the Shoremen.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Wednesday, when it hosts Franklin & Marshall College at 3:30 p.m.
