Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) scored in the 25th minute and classmate
Peter Como (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) made three saves, including a diving stop in the 88th minute en route to his first collegiate shutout, as the Gettysburg College men's soccer team ran its record to 3-0 with a 1-0 victory over the University of Redlands Saturday evening at Clark Field.
It was the second night of the Gettysburg/Messiah Invitational, with Messiah hosting and defeating Neumann University 2-0 in the other match on Saturday night.
Under first-year head coach
Mark Mettrick, the Bullets are now 3-0 for the first time since 2006. Redlands (1-3), which hails from Southern California, was coming off a 2013 season in which it finished 12-4.
The start of the match was delayed an hour and 10 minutes due to lightning.
The Bullets took three shots over the opening 24 minutes before finally breaking through after being awarded a corner kick on the right side. Senior
Kyle Franks' (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) offering was deflected out, but DePontes ripped home a shot inside the right post for his team-leading third goal of the season and what held up as the game-winner.
Gettysburg outshot the Bulldogs 3-1 over the remainder of the period to finish with a 7-4 edge for the half. The Bullets also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks in the opening stanza.
Redlands turned up its offensive intensity in the second half, when it outshot the Orange and Blue 6-3. The Bulldogs attempted the final three shots of the night, including two point-blank headers in the final five minutes. On Redlands' final corner of the night, the ball was served inside the box to Charles Izydorek, whose header nearly snuck inside the left post. But Como used all of his 6-4 frame to make a diving stop, and senior defender
Andrew Carlino (Kennet Square, Pa./Unionville) cleared it off the line to clinch the victory for the Bullets.
Both teams finished with 10 shots for the night, and the Bullets held a 9-4 surplus in corners. Josh Haskill was credited with two saves for Redlands.
The Bullets close out a three-match homestand on Wednesday, when they take on top-ranked and defending Division III national champion Messiah College at 7 p.m.
