Box Score

ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – Senior Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) scored four goals while freshman Connor Sweeney (Great Falls, Va./Potomac School) won 16-of-25 face-offs to lead the eighth-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team to a 15-9 win at previously-undefeated Eastern University on Saturday for the team's sixth-straight victory to open the year.

The two sides were tied 3-3 at the end of the first quarter before the Bullets (6-0) opened up a gap with a 5-0 run over a nine-minute span in the second quarter. Gettysburg, which outshot Eastern 54-32, then put the game away with another 5-0 spurt that overlapped the final two quarters.

Senior Brendan Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) added three goals for the Bullets, who continued their best start since 2010. His twin brother, Jimmy Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay), added two goals and one assist and, early in the fourth quarter, the two connected for a goal for the first time at Gettysburg.

Sophomore Sean Fumai (Weston, Conn./Weston), junior Jameson Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), and junior Paul Werner (Westfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) contributed two goals apiece for the Bullets.

Freshman goalie Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) led the defense with 10 saves – his second-highest total of the season – while junior defenseman Geoff Davis (Jefferson, Md./McDonogh School) posted five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

John Dunn led Eastern (5-1) with three goals and one assist while Nick DiPiano made 17 saves.

Smith scored the game's first goal just 32 seconds into the contest. The Eagles answered with back-to-back tallies to take their only lead of the game before Fumai and Maddux went back-to-back and give the Bullets a 3-2 edge. The Eagles tied it on Dunn's first goal with just 44 seconds on the first-quarter clock.

The Morris brothers sparked Gettysburg's first 5-0 spurt. Jimmy scored 43 seconds into the second quarter before Brendan converted a feed from sophomore Reed Barbe (Greenwich, Conn./Suffield Academy) with 9:46 left in the first half, giving the Bullets a 5-3 lead. Maddux then sandwiched a pair of goals around a Fumai tally as the visitors pushed their lead to 8-3 with 5:31 to go in the half.

Dunn scored consecutive goals to pull Eastern to within three with 26 seconds left, but the Bullets reversed the momentum when Smith took a pass from senior Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and struck three seconds before the horn to hand Gettysburg a 9-5 halftime advantage.

Werner scored with 9:30 left in the third quarter before the Eagles answered with a pair that made it a 10-7 game with 5:13 showing in the period. But that's when the Bullets embarked on their second 5-0 run, starting with a goal from Jimmy Morris with 1:33 left in the stanza. Jimmy then fed Brendan for a goal with 13:41 remaining in the game, handing the Orange and Blue a 12-7 lead.

Werner, Brendan Morris, and Maddux proceeded to score the final three goals of the surge, with Barbe and sophomore long-stick midfielder Chris Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) supplying assists on the last two and giving the Bullet a 15-7 advantage with 7:36 left. Eastern scored twice inside the final 5:23 to set the final verdict.

Gettysburg plays its Centennial Conference opener next Saturday, when it hosts Haverford College at 1 p.m.
