Box Score

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Five different players scored at least two goals and the fourth-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team used balanced effort to earn a 15-6 Centennial Conference (CC) victory at Muhlenberg College on Saturday.

Sophomore Sean Fumai (Weston, Conn./Weston) poured in a career-high three goals and dished out two assists for the Bullets (9-0, 2-0 CC), who equaled their best start since 2010. Senior Brendan Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) and junior Jameson Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) added two goals and two assists apiece, and with his final point of the day – a fourth-quarter assist – Smith reached the 100-career point plateau.

Senior Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and junior Paul Werner (Westfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) added two goals apiece while senior Jimmy Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) contributed one goal and two assists.

Freshman goalie Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) made seven saves for the Bullets while junior defenseman Bill McAvoy (Villanova, Pa./Episcopal Academy) registered a career-high six ground balls to go with two caused turnovers.

Jon Thomas scored two goals for Muhlenberg (3-5, 0-3 CC) while Adam Schlauch made nine saves and allowed 13 goals over 47 minutes. Jake Solomon won 14 of 21 face-offs for the Mules.

Gettysburg never trailed after scoring the game's first four goals. Though the Bullets outshot Muhlenberg 13-2 in the first quarter, it was just a 2-0 game at the end of the opening period, when Solomon made four of his saves. Smith scored off an assist from Jimmy Morris to put the Orange and Blue on the scoreboard just 1:49 into the contest before Firouzan struck with 9:25 on the clock.

The Bullets flipped the switch offensively in the second quarter, when they outscored Muhlenberg 8-1. Sophomore long-stick midfielder Chris Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) provided a spark when he knocked the ball loose after Muhlenberg had won the face-off. Freshman Connor Sweeney (Great Falls, Va./Potomac School) picked up the loose ball and passed it to Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) who scored 14 seconds into the quarter. Jimmy Morris fed Smith again with 12:49 showing to make it a 4-0 game.

Muhlenberg answered when Niko Del Moro scored with 11:26 remaining in the half. However, that's when the Bullets embarked on a 9-0 run that spanned into the fourth quarter. Gettysburg scored their next five goals over a 4:02 spurt, and Fumai had a hand in the first three. He scored to make it 5-1 with 9:30 on the clock, then assisted senior long-stick midfielder Owen Rothe's (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) second career goal 1:22 later. Fumai then converted a man-up goal on a dish from Smith as Gettysburg's lead swelled to 7-1.

Werner got into the act just over a minute later, scoring his two goals 20 seconds apart to make it 9-1. Werner's first goal was assisted by sophomore Samuel Woodcock (Clifton Park, N.Y./Berkshire School) while Brendan Morris set up his second tally.

Jimmy Morris closed out the half with an unassisted goal to hand the Bullets a 10-1 advantage at the break.

Gettysburg continued its run in the third quarter, when it tacked on two more goals. Brendan Morris scored with 4:50 on the clock, then assisted on Firouzan's second half as the Bullets led 12-1 heading into the final frame.

Brendan Morris notched his final goal with 13:05 left before Muhlenberg stopped the bleeding on a Conner Burdick goal with 11:18 remaining. Fumai then contributed to Gettysburg's final two goals, assisting freshman Patrick Decker (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) with 9:37 remaining, then scoring off a Smith assist with 8:47 left to make it 15-3. Muhlenberg scored four unanswered goals the rest of the way to set the final score.

The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action next Saturday, when they visit Swarthmore College starting at 1 p.m.
