Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa. – Senior
Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) scored a career-high seven goals and handed out one assist, and No. 17 Gettysburg piled up 14 second-half goals in an 18-7 non-conference men's lacrosse victory at Messiah College on Wednesday.
Â
Maddux' seven goals were the most by a Bullet since Brooke Farrell '99 also scored seven in a 22-1 victory at Swarthmore College on April 24, 1999. All seven of his goals were scored over a 14:38 stretch over the middle two quarters, including four in a row at one point and six in an explosive third quarter in which Gettysburg outscored the Falcons 10-0. All seven of Maddux' goals were even-strength.
Â
The Bullets, who are 3-0 for the first time since 2010, also received two goals and four assists from sophomore
Sean Fumai (Weston, Conn./Weston) while senior
Brendan Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) contributed two goals and three assists. Junior
Jameson Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) added two goals and one assist while sophomore
Kyle Hewett (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) finished 14-for-25 on face-offs. Freshman
Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) made five saves over the opening 52 minutes in goal.
Â
Tyler Goglio finished with two goals and two assists for Messiah (1-2) while Blake Knobloch posted two goals and one assist. Brooks Arnold made six saves while yielding 12 goals in 49 minutes of action.
Â
The Falcons outscored Gettysburg 2-1 over the opening five minutes, only to watch the Bullets reel off a 13-0 run spanning late into the third quarter.
Â
Justin Bradley and Drew Pagenkopf sandwiched a pair of goals around a
Paul Werner (Westfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) tally to hand Messiah a 2-1 lead with 7:10 left in the opening quarter. But senior defensive midfielder
Jack Harvazinski (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) struck with 4:25 left in the period to kick off Gettysburg's big run.
Â
The score remained deadlocked, however, until freshman
Patrick Decker (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) deposited his first career goal with 5:16 remaining in the opening half. Maddux got into the act with 57 ticks showing to hand the Bullets a 4-2 halftime advantage.
Â
Gettysburg held just a 16-12 shot advantage in the first half before racking up a 31-13 surplus in the second half.
Â
It would remain a two-goal game over the opening 3:30 of the second half until the Bullets erupted with nearly a goal per minute over the rest of the period. Maddux scored three times in exactly one minute, with the second two coming nine seconds apart and making it 7-2. Sophomore
Samuel Woodcock (Clifton Park, N.Y./Berkshire School) scored with 9:50 remaining before Maddux continued the splurge, scoring goal No. 5 to hand the Bullets a 9-2 advantage with 8:26 still on the clock.
Â
Smith and Fumai potted consecutive tallies 1:46 apart as Gettysburg's lead swelled into double digits. Maddux bookended his final two goals around a man-up marker from senior
Jimmy Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay), giving the Bullets a 14-2 bulge heading into the final quarter.
Â
Messiah stopped the bleeding with three straight goals to open the fourth quarter before Smith and Fumai went back-to-back again, pushing Gettysburg's lead to 16-5. Goglio scored twice inside the final 6:07 for the Falcons while
Brendan Morris and senior
Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) tossed in a man-up goal apiece.
Â
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it hosts third-ranked Lynchburg College in a big non-conference tilt at 1 p.m.
