Firouzan, Maddux Lead Bullets Past McDaniel

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Seniors Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) combined for 10 goals and four assists as the second-ranked and undefeated Bullets used an 11-0 run to capture a 16-6 Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse victory over McDaniel College Saturday afternoon at an unseasonably hot Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
 
Gettysburg (13-0, 6-0 CC) remained undefeated and continued the team's best start in program history.
 
Firouzan scored seven points on career-high-tying six goals and one assist while Maddux notched four goals and three helpers in addition to seven ground balls. Maddux also moved into fifth in school history in career goals (145) and into a tie for seventh in points (197).
 
Senior Jimmy Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) added two goals and one assist while junior Paul Werner (Westfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) notched one goal and two assists. Freshman Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) paced the defense with 11 saves while senior Andrew Toner (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) was credited with three caused turnovers.
 
With the win, Gettysburg head coach Hank Janczyk earned his 399th overall career victory. Now in his 33rd season of coaching and his 28th year at Gettysburg, he has registered 354 of his wins with the Bullets.
 
Eric Ritchie made eight saves over three quarters for the Green Terror (7-6, 4-3 CC).
 
Gettysburg trailed just once on the day after Kyle Fiedler scored a man-up goal 17 seconds into the game. But the Bullets answered with a 3-0 run on goals from Firouzan, Morris, and Werner. The two sides traded goals in the last 4:30 of the quarter, and Firouzan struck for the second time to make it 4-2 heading into the second period.
 
Morris scored again just over two minutes into the stanza before McDaniel responded with three straight tallies to pull even at 5-5 with 3:03 showing in the half. But Gettysburg kicked off their decisive run with two goals in the final 1:15 of the quarter, starting with a Firouzan tally with 1:15 on the clock. Maddux struck with three ticks showing and the Bullets led 7-5 at the intermission.
 
It was the Firouzan and Maddux show in the second half, when the two had a hand in allb of Gettysburg's nine goals. Firouzan, Maddux, and sophomore Sean Fumai (Weston, Conn./Weston) accounted for the first three goals of the period to make it 10-5 before Firouzan went back-to-back. Sophomore Reed Barbe (Greenwich, Conn./Suffield Academy) potted his first goal of the year before Maddux scored twice in the final 1:34 of the quarter to hand the Bullets a 15-5 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes.
 
Maddux completed Gettysburg's scoring with 12:17 left for his 40th goal of the season and 140th of his career. McDaniel set the final score when it struck with 26 ticks showing.
 
The Bullets conclude the regular season with a pair of games this week, starting with a road game versus Franklin & Marshall College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
