Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) made a season-high 16 saves – including 11 in a pivotal second quarter – and the second-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team put together its first-ever undefeated regular season, holding off Centennial Conference (CC) foe Washington College 11-9 on Senior Day at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Â
The Bullets (15-0, 8-0 CC) also broke the school record for the longest winning streak with their 15th consecutive victory. Gettysburg will enter the Centennial Conference playoffs as the No. 1 seed and host No. 4 seed Washington (6-8, 5-3 CC) again on Wednesday in the conference semifinals at a time to be announced.
Â
Gettysburg's 11 seniors were honored in a ceremony before the start of the game.
Â
In a game that was tied five times, and in which neither side led by more than two goals, Gettysburg used a 6-2 run spanning the second and third quarters to open up its first two-goal lead (9-7) of the day. The two sides traded goals twice in the fourth quarter, with junior
Jameson Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) giving the Bullets some breathing room down the stretch when he scored the game's final tally with 4:42 remaining.
Â
Smith finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Bullets offensively while senior
Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) added two goals and one assist. Senior
Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) contributed two goals, and junior
Paul Werner (Westfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) posted one goal and three assists.
Â
Stephen Luck and Luke Birnbaum registered two goals and one assist each for the Shoremen while Michael Trapp scored twice and won 16-of-19 face-offs. Jackson Szurley turned aside 12 shots.
Â
Brady's 16 saves exceeded his previous season-best by two, achieved in the team's 12-6 victory at Salisbury University back on Feb. 28.
Â
Washington trailed for only the final 2:53 of the first half after Trapp scored 19 seconds into the game. It was the start of the two sides trading goals three times. Maddux had a hand in each of Gettysburg's first three tallies, assisting senior
Brendan Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) before scoring off a feed from senior defensive midfielder
Jack Harvazinski (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and a dish from senior
Jimmy Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) to make it a 3-3 game with 2:38 left in the opening quarter.
Â
Luke Birnbaum scored the final two goals of the half, including a man-up tally with 29 seconds left, to give the Shoremen a 5-3 lead heading into the second quarter.
Â
An amazing stanza from Brady helped the Bullets seize their first lead by the end of the period. Facing a 19-shot barrage, he registered 11 saves without yielding a goal. At the other end of the field, senior defensive middie
Andrew Toner (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) provided a spark, scoring off an assist from sophomore
Sean Fumai (Weston, Conn./Weston) before assisting on a goal from Werner that tied it at 5-5 with 4:54 on the first-half clock.
Jimmy Morris then cashed in on a Werner feed with 2:53 remaining to give the Bullets their first lead of the game heading into the break.
Â
Washington rallied in the third quarter, however, pulling even on each of its first two goals, which were sandwiched around Smith's first tally. But with the game tied 7-7, Fumai gave the Bullets the lead for good, scoring a man-up goal with 1:57 left in the period. Firouzan then go into the act, converting a dish from Werner with 34 ticks showing to make it a 9-7 game heading into the final quarter.
Â
Luck made it 9-8 with 13:16 left, but Firouzan answered when he scored off an assist from Smith with 10:57 showing. Sam Birnbaum brought the Shoremen back once again, scoring with 9:22 left, before Smith iced it for the Bullets.
