GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Four hours were not enough to decide a winner between Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action at a wind-swept Kirchhoff Field on Tuesday.
Â
After 12 innings, the game was called due to darkness, resulting in a 7-7 tie. It was the Bullets' first draw since a 4-4 stalemate versus Richard Stockton on March 13, 2004.
Â
The Bullets (21-11-1, 7-3-1 CC) now find themselves in third place in the Centennial Conference standings but continue to trail conference-leading Johns Hopkins (21-9-2, 8-2-1 CC) by one game.
Â
The back-and-forth contest featured three ties and two lead changes, with both sides scoring three runs in the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
Â
Contributing to the lengthy affair were a combined 34 hits, 22 men left on base, and seven errors.
Â
The Gettysburg pitching staff enjoyed an outstanding game, holding the Blue Jays to four earned runs while racking up 19 strikeouts without walking a batter. Sophomore
Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield), starting on three days rest, worked into the ninth inning, scattering 11 hits and five runs (two earned) while striking out 10 – one shy of his career-high. He caught the Blue Jays looking on six of his Ks, including all three in the fourth.
Â
Freshman
Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) came on to get the final out in the ninth and shut down the Blue Jays over the final 3 1/3 innings, fanning a season-high eight batters while allowing just four hits.
Â
Senior
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) went 3-for-5 with a double and triple at the plate while stretching his hitting streak to 18 games. Sophomore
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) was also 3-for-5 while seniors
Andrew Hourigan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) and
Shawn Moffitt (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) collected two hits apiece.
Â
Connor Reynolds led Johns Hopkins, going 4-for-6, while Carter Burns threw four innings of scoreless relief.
Â
DeMartino carried a 4-2 lead into the eighth inning, only to see the Blue Jays rally with two outs for a pair of unearned runs to draw even. He was lifted from the game after allowing a leadoff single in the ninth, and Hopkins would go on to load the bases against freshman reliever
Jonny Bray (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) on a pair of bunts before a hit batsman made it 5-4. After Bray recorded a pair of outs, Mitch Weaver drilled a two-run single to left to put the visitors up three. However, that's when Wortmann on to strike out a batter for the last out.
Â
The Bullets rallied in the bottom of the inning versus closer Alex Ross. Freshman Charles Clarke (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) reached on an error leading off before Sneed followed up with a single. Junior
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central then blasted a double to right, scoring Clarke and prompting a pitching change.
Â
Burns entered the game and uncorked a wild pitch to make it 7-6, and two batters later Wright smacked a single up the middle to pull the Bullets even.
Â
Both sides had scoring opportunities in the extra innings, but combined to leave five runners on base. The Bullets appeared to have something going when Sneed was hit with a pitch leading off the 11th before Anderson bunted him to second. However, he would be stranded there as Carter recorded the final two outs of the inning.
Â
Wortmann left runners on first and second in the 11th and retired his final four batters in his second-longest outing of the season.
Â
Gettysburg knocked out Hopkins starter Jake Enterlin in the fifth inning. Enterlin came into the game with a 5-0 record and a sub-1.00 ERA, but was touched for three runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. The Bullets trailed 3-1 before pushing across three runs in the fifth, which was highlighted by a towering two-run triple from senior
Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) that made it 3-2. Wright added a sacrifice fly to give the Bullets a two-run lead.
Â
DeMartino escaped a tight jam in the seventh, when the Blue Jays led off with a single and double to put runners on second and third. But that's where they stayed after DeMartino induced a groundout followed by a pop-out and fly-out.
Â
The same two teams conclude their season series on Thursday at Johns Hopkins starting at 3:30 p.m.
