COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball team used a big offensive performance in the nightcap to salvage a split in its Centennial Conference (CC)-opening doubleheader on Saturday at Ursinus College.

The Bullets (15-9, 1-1 CC) dropped the opener 7-3, but outhit the Bears 17-9 in the nightcap en route to a 12-6 victory.

Senior Luke Lawrence (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) went 5-for-10 on the day to lead the Bullets at the plate while classmates Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) and Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) smacked four hits apiece. Sophomore Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) fired a complete game to pick up the win in the second game.

Gettysburg led 2-1 early on in the opener before Ursinus (15-8, 1-1 CC) scored four runs in the fourth versus junior starter Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan). The Bullets cut it to 5-3 in the sixth, but Ursinus padded its lead with single runs in the sixth and eighth off freshman reliever Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane).

Power (4-2) was charged with the loss, yielding five runs on eight hits and six walks over five innings while striking out three. Wortmann pitched the final three innings and allowed two runs on four hits and a walk.

Sean Pizik (4-1) scattered 10 hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out five over eight innings to pick up the win for the Bears.

Lawrence finished 3-for-4 in the opener while Wright finished 2-for-4. Christopher Jablonski went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Ursinus.

Brad DeMartino worked his first collegiate nine-inning complete game.
Gettysburg jumped on the Bears early in the nightcap, outscoring the hosts 11-3 over the first three and a half innings. Klimowicz doubled in a run in the first before the Bullets erupted for 10 runs on 10 hits over the third and fourth innings.

Senior Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) cracked a three-run double to spearhead a five-run Bullet third before Ursinus answered with three in the bottom of the frame, pulling to within 6-3. Gettysburg opened up some breathing room, however, with another five-spot in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single from junior Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser).

The Bears refused to go away, however, and scored three in the seventh to make it an 11-6 game. The Bears were still threatening with runners on first and second and the team's cleanup hitter at the plate with two outs, but DeMartino escaped with a flyout. He went on to retire six of seven batters the rest of the way.

Klimowicz finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs, three RBIs for the Bullets while junior John Convery (Media, Pa./Penncrest) also finished 3-for-5 with two runs. Lawrence, sophomore Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy), Wright, and senior Shawn Moffitt (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) all banged out two hits while junior Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) doubled and scored three runs.

DeMartino (4-1) twirled his first career nine-inning complete game and his third overall. He scattered nine hits, walked two, and struck out five.

Junior Seth Regensburg (3-2) started and took the loss for Ursius, yielding six runs over the first 2 2/3 innings. Five additional pitchers entered the game for the Bears.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Tuesday, when it hosts Franklin & Marshall College at 3:30 p.m.
