WESTMINSTER, Md. – Senior
Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) went 5-for-6, tying a record and reaching a milestone to lead the Gettysburg College baseball team to a 17-6 Centennial Conference (CC) victory at McDaniel College Wednesday afternoon.
The Bullets (24-12-1, 10-4-1 CC) jumped on the Green Terror right away with an eight-run first inning, highlighted by a grand slam from senior
Shawn Moffitt (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East).
With three conference games remaining, Gettysburg remains in second place in the CC standings, trailing 27th-ranked Johns Hopkins University by two games.
Klimowicz slugged four extra-base hits (three doubles, one triple) and became the second player this season to tie the school for hits in a game, as sophomore
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) achieved the feat twice earlier this season. With his first hit of the day - an RBI-single in the first – Klimowicz reached the 100-hit plateau for his career. He also scored three runs and drove in three runs.
The Bullets outhit McDaniel 21-10 for the game, with senior
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) going 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs. Sneed and junior
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) added three hits apiece for Gettysburg, which broke the school record for doubles in a season (88) and tied the team's single-season mark for triples (29).
Sophomore
Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) started on the mound for Gettysburg and tossed six innings to earn the win, yielding four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five. Freshman
Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) tossed three shutout innings of relief to earn the save – his second and the team's school-record 10th of the season.
O'Shea and Rosanova collected two hits apiece for McDaniel (27-8, 8-7 CC).
The Bullets sent 12 batters to the plate and banged out seven hits in the first inning, which, in addition to Moffitt's blast, included an RBI-triple from Sneed.
Gettysburg added two more runs in the second to make it 10-2. McDaniel pulled to within six following a three-run fourth, but the Bullets answered with five unanswered runs to push their lead to 15-4. Klimowicz helped power the offense with an RBI-triple in the fifth and a run-scoring double in the seventh.
After McDaniel scored twice in the sixth, the Bullets set the final score with a two-run ninth.
The two teams closed out their season series on Friday, when Gettysburg hosts McDaniel at 3:30 p.m.
