Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall College scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning and the host Diplomats held on for a 3-2 victory over Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action Friday afternoon.
Â
The Bullets (16-10, 2-2 CC) had just tied the game at 2-all in the top of the eighth on an RBI-single from senior
Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) before F&M (11-11, 2-2 CC) rallied with back-to-back one-out doubles off two different pitchers in the bottom of the frame.
Â
Sophomore
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) finished 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Bullets while senior
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) also doubled and went 2-for-4.
Â
Sophomore
Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) started on the mound for Gettysburg and worked into the eighth inning, marking the fifth time in six starts this season that he has thrown at least seven innings. He scattered seven hits over 7 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out one.
Â
With Gettysburg trailing 2-1, Sneed doubled down the leftfield line leading off the eighth versus F&M starter Mike Androconis. Junior
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) then reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners, prompting a pitching change.
Â
Gareth Fancher took the mound and induced a popout before Kelley's big hit. However, Fancher would escape with a 4-6-3 double play.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, DeMartino (4-2) struck out leadoff hitter Tyler Daley before Casey Bulik doubled down the leftfield line. Junior
Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) was then summoned out of the Bullet bullpen for his first relief appearance of the season. He was greeted with what held up as the game-winning double by David Iacobucci, but he would keep it a one-run game by retiring the next two batters.
Â
Gettysburg threatened in the ninth against closer Andrew Mascis when junior
Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) drew a one-out, pinch-hit walk. However, Mascis rolled up the third inning-ending double play for the Diplomats – a 6-4-3 twin killing – to seal the win and pick up his fifth save of the year.
Â
Franklin & Marshall took an early lead when it pushed across one run on a pair of singles in the bottom of the first. The Bullets came back to tie it in the second, when senior
Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) led off with a single and scored on a double from Wright two batters later.
Â
DeMartino tossed a pair of perfect innings in the second and third before the Diplomats went back in front with another run on a walk and three singles. However, he would settle in over the next three innings, allowing just a two-out single in the fifth. He retired eight in a row before Bulik's double in the eighth.
Â
The Bullets had several scoring chances in the middle innings, but Androconis worked out of several jams and stranded a runner at third in both the third and the fifth.
Â
Androconis threw seven innings, scattering eight hits and three walks while yielding both runs. Fancher (2-0) earned the victory with his one scoreless inning.
Â
Gettysburg returns to action on Sunday, when it hosts Swarthmore College at 12:30 p.m. in a Centennial Conference doubleheader.
