YORK, Pa. – Call them the Cardiac Kids.

Senior Mike Distler (Lutherville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored 36 seconds into overtime, and for the second game in a row, the fifth-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team advanced in the NCAA Division III tournament with an OT victory, defeating No. 7 York (Pa.) College 7-6 Wednesday afternoon at Kinsley Field.

Gettysburg, which marches into the NCAA semifinals for the 10th time in program history and for the second year in a row, will face the winner of the Wednesday night's quarterfinal between No. 3 Salisbury University and No. 6 Denison University on Sunday at a time and location to be determined.

Gettysburg also defeated No. 15 Cabrini College 11-10 in OT in the second round of the tournament this past Saturday after opening with an 8-7 victory over Lynchburg last Wednesday.

The victory avenged the Bullets' 9-7 loss at York back on March 9. Since then, the Orange and Blue have won 15 straight games, marking the second-longest winning streak in program history behind only last season's 20-gamer.

Gettysburg won the opening face-off of the extra session, with junior long-stick midfielder Chris Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) scooping up the ground ball from sophomore FOGO Connor Sweeney (Great Falls, Va./Potomac School). After a Bullet timeout, Distler drove in from the left wing and sent home a diving shot into the top-left corner of the net, setting off a celebration of blue jerseys on the field.

Distler finished with two goals and two assists and has now piled up five goals and five assists over his last two games. Freshman Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) also turned in another big performance in the postseason, scoring two goals and assisting on another. He posted one of the key moments in the game when his strip of the York goalie led directly to a Gettysburg goal that was part of a key 3-0 Bullet run late in the third quarter.

Freshman Blake Gray (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) added two goals for the Bullets while senior Jake Adoni (Fort Washington, Pa./Germantown Academy) made eight saves. Palladino notched four caused turnovers, four ground balls, and one assist, freshman Chris Verdeur (Villanova, Pa./Shipley School) added six ground balls, and Sweeney won 10-of-17 face-offs.

Brendan McGrath finished with two goals and one assist while Caleb Abney made eight saves for the Spartans (18-4).

York was whistled for a penalty two minutes into the contest, and Gray cashed in for the Bullets just after it expired, finishing off a feed from senior Paul Werner (Westfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep). Another York penalty led to Gettysburg's second goal, with Heller converting a man-up tally off an assist from Distler. The Bullets outshot the Spartans 12-3 in the opening quarter and took a 2-0 lead into the second period.

Distler got into the act with 11:51 left in the first half, scoring his first goal to make it a 3-0 game before the Spartans got on the scoreboard just over a minute later.

York appeared to have scored again with just under three minutes left in the half, but a Spartan was called to have entered the crease as he dove toward the goal. Gettysburg took a 3-1 lead into the locker room, doubling up the Spartans (20-10) in shots in the opening half.

The Bullets withstood a two-man advantage from York early in the third quarter, as Adoni made a point-blank save from the right post. However, the Spartans would rally late in the period, reeling off three unanswered goals to assume a 4-3 advantage heading into the final stanza.

Gettysburg rallied with three straight goals of its own to go up 6-4. Heller pulled the Bullets even with 12:51 left, burying a shot from the left wing off a pass from Distler, who was clearing the ball up the middle of the field. Then with 9:35 left, Heller checked the ball from the 6-foot-6 Abney, who had drifted behind the net. He then pushed the loose ball to Werner, who circled in for an empty-net goal that made it 5-4.

The momentum continued to swing in Gettysburg's favor later in the quarter when Palladino sent a pass upfield to Gray, who scored in front of the net to make it a 6-4 game with 9:26 showing. However, York would rally on goals from Austin Glab with 9:26 left and McGrath with 1:46 to go.

Distler was nearly the hero in regulation, but his shot with 18 seconds left sailed wide. York gained possession in their end of the field after a length-of-the-field pass from Abney, and the Spartans called timeout with four seconds left. However, they were unable to get off a shot before the horn.

Gettysburg outshot York 35-27 and also finished with a 36-20 advantage in ground balls.
