Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Lucas Weissman (Short Hills, N.J./Milburn) and freshman
Precious Ozoh (Abuja, Nigeria/Holderness School [N.H.]) scored their first collegiate goals as the Gettysburg College men's soccer team blanked previously-unbeaten York (Pa.) College 2-0 in its home opener Saturday evening at a hot and muggy Clark Field.
The Bullets (2-1) were edged 10-9 in shots, but freshman
Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College) made five saves to register his first collegiate shutout against a York (3-1-1) squad that had scored 11 goals over its first four matches entering the night.
Gettysburg, which won its home opener for the third year in a row under head coach
Mark Mettrick, started six freshmen for the second time this season.
The Orange and Blue nearly jumped ahead in the 24th minute when senior
KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) found himself alone in the box, but his blast from the left was denied by a leaping save from keeper Charlie Johnson, who finished with two saves.
The hosts went ahead less than a minute later when Weissman cashed in on a set piece. He took a cross from freshman
Jeff Schaefer (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) on the right and rifled in a shot in front of the net for what would hold up as the game-winner.
Keane saved all three of the Spartans' first-half shots on goal as Gettysburg took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The Bullets wasted little time padding their lead in the second half, when a quick York turnover led to another goal. Less than two minutes into the period, junior
Patrick Santini stepped in front of a pass and flicked a pass to DePontes, who pushed it ahead to Ozoh. The freshman broke free down the right side before ripping a shot into the far side of the net.
Keane and the Gettysburg defense would make the lead stand up, allowing just five shots, including just two on goal, the rest of the way as the Bullets earned their first shutout of the season.
Gettysburg returns home on Wednesday, when it takes on Messiah College at 4 p.m. in another non-conference affair.
