Box Score
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Senior
Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored on a penalty kick in the 51st minute and freshman
Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College) made six saves as the Gettysburg College men's soccer team went on the road to earn a 1-0 victory over Ursinus College in the Centennial Conference (CC) opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
The Bullets (3-1-1, 1-0 CC), who won their Centennial Conference opener for the fourth year in a row, outshot the Bears 20-13, but Vince Maiorino made 12 saves for Ursinus (2-3, 0-1 CC).
Gettysburg survived a late scare, playing a man down for the last three minutes after receiving a red card. The Bears threatened when they received a corner with a minute left, but their ensuing header sailed wide. Keane preserved the win when he made a save as time expired.
It was the second year in a row the two sides engaged in a nailbiter, as the Bullets rallied to score in the final minute of regulation before earning a 2-1 overtime victory last season.
The Orange and Blue controlled the opening half, when they outshot Ursinus 11-3. But that's when Maiorino made six of his stops, including three in a 12-second flurry 17 minutes into the contest.
Gettysburg received a break early in the second half, when the Bears were whistled for a foul inside the box. Smith was able to cash in, shooting left when Maiorino dove right to provide the Bullets with all the offense they would need.
The Bears would get untracked offensively, however, and outshot the Bullets 10-9 in the period. Keane was up to the challenge, however, making five of his saves in the stanza, including his big stop at the horn en route to his second shutout of the season.
Maiorino kept it close with another six saves in the second half.
Gettysburg returns to the pitch on Wednesday, when it visits Marymount University at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
