Box Score
SALISBURY, Md. – The sixth-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team gave No. 1 Salisbury all it could handle, but the Bullets came up just short in a 10-9 overtime thriller on Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium in a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III semifinals.
Â
Salisbury (4-0), the defending Division III national champions, won the opening face-off of the extra session and called timeout before Brendan Bromwell scored the game-winner with 2:34 on the clock.
Â
Senior
Sean Fumai (Weston, Conn./Weston) notched his third-straight hat trick to open the season with three goals and one assist for the Bullets (2-1), who never led but tied the game on five occasions. Senior
Reed Barbe (Greenwich, Conn./Suffield Academy) added two goals and one assist while sophomore
Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) also notched a pair of goals.
Â
Junior
Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) led the defense with 14 saves, tying the fourth-highest total of his career. He made 11 of his stops in a back-and-forth second half. Freshman defenseman
Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) added a team-high four ground balls for Gettysburg while junior
Connor Sweeney (Great Falls, Va./Potomac School) went 5-for-10 on face-offs.
Â
Garrett Reynolds, Carson Kalama, and Adam Huber scored two goals apiece for the Sea Gulls, which held advantages in shots (40-30) and ground balls (38-27). Colin Reymann made five saves for Salisbury while Duncan Campbell won 12-of-18 face-offs.
Â
The Sea Gulls jumped on top with the game's first two goals, as Josh Melton and Corey Gwin scored two minutes apart early on. But after Gwin's tally, the Bullets won the face-off before Fumai struck for a quick goal off a feed from sophomore defensive midfielder
Ryan Kelly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood). Sophomore
Blake Gray (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) struck for a man-up tally with 2:53 left in the quarter and it was a 2-2 game heading into the second stanza.
Â
Gwin, Reynolds, and Huber scored one goal apiece to give Salisbury its biggest lead of the day at 5-2 with 7:23 left in the second quarter. But Gettysburg ended the half on back-to-back goals from Harvey and Barbe to make it a 5-4 game at the break.
Â
Huber struck again for the Sea Gulls just over two minutes into the third quarter. But with 4:24 left in the period, sophomore
Sam Kaplan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) provided a spark, scooping a loose ball in front of the net and slipping a shot past Reymann to make it 6-5. Harvey then pulled Gettysburg even with 3:35 remaining, when he accepted a pass from Fumai and flipped in a shot to finish off a fast break.
Â
The two sides would go on to trade goals three times over the remainder of regulation, starting with a goal from Kalama with 40 seconds left in the third quarter that put the hosts up 7-6 heading into the final period.
Â
Fumai provided Gettysburg's next two tallies, starting with a one-timer from the right wing off a feed from Barbe with 13:32 remaining. Fumai then answered another Kalama tally, taking an upfield pass from sophomore long-stick midfielder
Chris Verdeur (Villanova, Pa./Shipley School) and scoring in transition to make it 8-8 with 7:50 to go.
Â
Reynolds had the answer for Salibury with 3:38 left, but Brady prevented further damage when he swatted away a shot off the ensuing face-off. Junior defenseman
Nick Hill (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) tracked down the loose ball, and after a Gettysburg clear Barbe struck again, ripping in a high shot before Salisbury could settle its defense.
Â
Brady made another save on a potential go-ahead shot from Salisbury with 2:05 left. Junior defenseman
Cullen Minion (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) gave the Bullets possession with a ground ball but after a Gettysburg timeout, the Sea Gulls forced a turnover. Salisbury called timeout with 54 seconds left and held for the last shot, but Gwin's attempt sailed wide right at the horn.
Â
Gettysburg suffered its first overtime loss since a 10-9 setback at Muhlenberg on March 30, 2013. The Bullets had won their previous four OT affairs.
Â
The Orange and Blue pick up their schedule next Saturday when they host No. 10 Stevenson at 1 p.m. in another non-conference tilt.
