Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) scored a career-high four goals and handed out one assist while junior goalie
Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) made 10 saves as the 15th-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team defeated No. 14 Ursinus 10-6 in the Centennial Conference (CC) opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Gettysburg (5-3, 1-0 CC), which won its third game in a row, trailed just once – when it was a 1-0 game. The Bullets led just 5-4 early in the third quarter before scoring the next three goals spanning into the fourth quarter to open up some breathing room.
In a rematch of the last two Centennial Conference championship games, Harvey scored the team's first two and final two goals. A transfer from Ohio Wesleyan, he posted his second career hat trick and his first as a Bullet.
Sophomore
Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) added two goals and two assists for the Bullets while freshman
Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored the first two goals of his career. Senior
Sean Fumai (Weston, Conn./Weston) contributed a goal and an assist.
Gettysburg, which has now held its last three opponents to six goals or less, also received three ground balls and two caused turnovers from freshman defenseman
Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) while sophomore long-stick midfielder
Chris Verdeur (Verdeur (Villanova, Pa./Shipley School) added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Peter DeSimone and Bobby McClure scored two goals apiece for the Bears (5-2, 0-1 CC) while Elliott Shevitz made seven saves.
McClure scored with 10:11 left in the opening quarter to spot the Bears (5-2, 0-1 CC) their early 1-0 advantage. But Harvey answered with 8:31 on the clock, and it was a 1-1 game at the end of the first quarter.
Harvey struck again less than two minutes into the second quarter before Gerard Brown tied it up at the 7:52 mark. But that's when the Bullets reeled off a 3-0 run, and they would lead the rest of the way. Heller opened the surge with 4:23 left before Kolen followed up with 2:53 remaining. Freshman
Blake Gray (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) capped the spurt with 21 ticks showing; however, McClure gave the Bears some momentum heading into the half when he scored with four seconds left, making it a 5-3 game at the break.
DeSimone netted a man-up goal a minute and a half into the third quarter to draw the Bears to within one before the Bullets embarked on their decisive run. They closed out the quarter with a pair of man-up tallies from Kolen and Heller to make it 7-4 heading into the final stanza. Fumai then capped then run when he took a pass from junior defensive midfielder
Sam Runkel (Fairfield, Conn./Avon Old Farms) and finished off a fast break for a man-down goal, giving his team an 8-4 lead.
The two sides traded goals twice the rest of the way, with Lou Harrison and DeSimone striking for Ursinus and Harvey converting twice for the Bullets, including a man-up tally with 8:24 left.
Gettysburg finished with slight advantages in shots (36-32) and ground balls (25-23).
The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action on Wednesday, when they visit Franklin & Marshall at 4 p.m.
