GETTYSBURG, Pa. – In a battle between a pair of top-10 men's lacrosse teams, No. 8 York (Pa.) jumped to a quick start and defeated No. 10 Gettysburg 16-8 at a sunny, blustery Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

The Spartans (5-1) outscored the Bullets 6-1 in the first quarter and led by at least four the rest of the way.

York held a major advantage in possession, winning 19 of 24 face-offs. Billy Sasso finished 19-for-24 at the X.

Four players accounted for all but three of York's goals, with Brendan McGrath leading the way with four goals and two assists. Thomas Pfeiffer added three goals and two assists while Hunter Davis and Austin Glab contributed three tallies apiece.

Reed Barbe (Greenwich, Conn./Suffield Academy) led Gettysburg (2-3) with two goals and two assists while classmate
Ivan Morris (Houston, Texas/Houston Christian) also scored twice. Sophomore
Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) notched one goal and three assists, and sophomore
Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) made 10 saves.

The two teams were meeting in a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III Championship quarterfinals, which Gettysburg won 7-6 in overtime.

The Bullets were facing a nationally-ranked opponent for the third game in a row after taking on No. 1 Salisbury and No. 11 Stevenson in their previous two outings.

York never trailed after scoring the game's first two goals during the opening three minutes. Barbe put Gettysburg on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter, but the Spartans used a 4-0 run over the final 6:35 of the period to build its 6-1 advantage.

Morris struck 2:35 into the second quarter with his first goal of the season to pull Gettysburg to within four, and after a Spartan tally, Heller made it a 7-3 game with 8:38 on the clock. However, the Spartans capped a long offensive possession with just six seconds showing, as McGrath just beat the shot clock to give the visitors an 8-3 halftime lead.

York won 10-of-12 face-offs in the first half, when it outshot the Bullets 24-7.

After the Spartans pushed their lead to 10-3 midway through the third quarter, Gettysburg twice pulled to within six, first on Morris' second goal with 4:22 on the clock, then on a tally from senior
Sean Fumai (Weston, Conn./Weston) with 1:20 left in the period that made it an 11-5 game. But York answered with a man-up goal with 29 seconds left and went on to score the first two goals of the final quarter, pushing its lead to nine. Gettysburg outscored York 3-2 over the final 6:39 to set the final score.

The Bullets return to the field on Saturday, when they visit Eastern University at 1 p.m. in another non-league tilt.
