Bullets Win Defensive Showdown at Haverford

Brady Preserves Victory With Three Late Saves

Tim Brady saved three potential game-tying shots at Haverford.
Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Junior Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) made three of his six saves in the final five minutes and the Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team posted its second straight one-goal victory, defeating host Haverford College 5-4 in Centennial Conference (CC) action Saturday afternoon.

Coming off an 11-10 win over No. 6 Dickinson this past Wednesday, the Bullets (8-5, 4-2 CC) allowed just one second-half goal while limiting an opponent to five goals or less for the fourth time this season.

Gettysburg trailed by a goal on three occasions in the first half but went in front for good with a 3-0 run spanning the second and third quarters.

All of Brady's final three stops came with the Bullets protecting a one-goal lead. He also made a game-clinching save in the final seconds of the team's victory over Dickinson.

Sophomore long-stick midfielder Chris Verdeur (Villanova, Pa./Shipley School) aided the defense with four ground balls and one caused turnover while Gettysburg's conference-leading man-down unit killed 4-of-5 penalties.

Five Bullets scored one goal apiece, with sophomores Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) and Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) posting one goal and one assist each.

The contest featured the fewest combined goals in a game involving Gettysburg since the team's 6-2 win over Washington and Lee on March 6, 2004. The Bullets' four-goal output also marked the program's fewest goals in a win since a 4-3 victory over Denison on March 18, 2001.

Dylan Slack made seven saves for Haverford (6-7, 2-4 CC) while PJ Jackson recorded six ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Haverford gained possession following a Gettysburg turnover and called timeout with 3:31 left. The Fords would then fire off three potential game-tying shots, but the second and third were turned away by Brady. The Bullets gained possession following Brady's final stop with 43 ticks showing and were able to run out the remainder of the clock.

The two sides traded goals three times to start the game. Patrick Girard struck 1:12 into the match to put the Fords up 1-0, but Harvey answered for Gettysburg exactly one minute later. Girard then converted a man-up tally to give the hosts a 2-1 edge with 10:03 on the first-quarter clock. However, senior Sean Fumai (Weston, Conn./Weston) finished off a dish from Heller with 4:03 left for his team-leading 29th goal of the season, and it was a 2-2 game after one quarter of play.

Stephen Deleo gave Haverford its third and final lead when he scored with 12:02 remaining in the opening half. But Gettysburg had an answer once again, as Heller accepted a feed from Harvey and scored with 4:46 showing, forging a 3-3 tie at the intermission.

Sophomore Blake Gray (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) put the Bullets ahead to stay when he struck with 6:13 left in the third quarter, and it would prove to be the only goal of the period. Freshman Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) provided a vital insurance goal when he cashed in with 12:53 remaining in the game, putting the Orange and Blue up 5-3.

Ben Frost scored with 8:25 left, making it a one-goal game and snapping a 33:37 scoreless drought for Haverford.

Gettysburg won the ensuing face-off, but committed a turnover with 6:16 left. Then with 4:52 remaining, Brady made the first of his three late-game saves, giving his team possession and setting up the white-knuckle finish.

The Fords finished with slight advantages in shots (25-24) and ground balls (26-23).

The Bullets take 10 days off from competition before visiting McDaniel on April 26 at 7 p.m. in another Centennial Conference outing.
