Wrestling Opens Dual Schedule with Three Victories

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The 22nd-ranked Gettysburg College wrestling team opened its dual schedule with three victories at the McDaniel College Duals Sunday afternoon.
 
After grabbing a spot in the national poll earlier this week, Gettysburg (3-0) pasted three victories on the board at McDaniel. The Bullets won six of the seven matches contested on the way to a 25-23 decision over the University of Scranton to open the day. Rowan College of Gloucester County slipped in front 18-12, but Gettysburg swept the final four bouts for a 27-18 victory. The Bullets closed with a dominating 46-9 win over Penn State Mont Alto.
 
Sophomore Alex Shaffer (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) posted the first of his three victories with a 15-6 major decision against Anthony Sortino from Scranton at 133 pounds. Freshman Eric Chambers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) followed with an 11-4 win at 141 and junior Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) recorded his 22nd career pin 48 seconds into the second round at 149.
 
The Bullets won each of the next three bouts against Scranton. Freshman Ray Martin (Downingtown, Pa./West Chester Henderson) won by technical fall (15-0, 3:48) at 157, sophomore Marc Larson (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) won 7-4 at 165, and senior Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) won by major decision (16-4) at 174.
 
Shaffer, sophomore Phil Angelo (Summit, N.J./Summit), and  freshman Kelvin Angelo Cupay (Beach Park, Ill./Warren Township) won their matches against Rowan College, but the Roadrunners pulled in front on a forfeit and pair of pins. Kowalski improved to 10-0 this season with a 14-5 major decision at 174 and sophomore Sal Puglisi (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) put the Bullets ahead with a 5-3 win at 184 pounds. Gettysburg dominated the final two matches as senior Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) posted a technical fall (20-3) at 197 and classmate Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep), ranked eighth in the country at heavyweight, posted a shutout (7-0) in the final contest.
 
Gettysburg closed with eight wins in 10 bouts against Penn State Mont Alto. Shaffer, sophomore Mike Carioscia (Pawling, N.Y./Canterbury School), junior Tristan Chen (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal), and sophomore Noah Struss (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) each posted pins at 133, 165, 174, and 184, respectively. Junior Traken Sutton (Wethersfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) won by major decision 9-0 at 157, while the Bullets picked up forfeit wins at 149, 197, and heavyweight. Triandafilou's forfeit win at heavyweight marked the 97th career victory.
 
Gettysburg resumes action at the Petrofes Invitational hosted by Messiah College on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
