SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Gettysburg swept the relays but Swarthmore won nine of 12 individual events and the host Garnet edged the Bullets 133-129 in a big Centennial Conference (CC) men's swimming meet Saturday afternoon.
The loss was the first of the season for the Gettysburg (6-1, 3-1 CC), which had won its previous 17 dual meets dating back to its 143-119 loss at Swarthmore on Jan. 30, 2016.
The Garnet (5-2, 5-0 CC) remained undefeated in conference dual meets this season.
Freshman
Aedan Collins (Westfield, N.J./Westfield), sophomore
Ogden Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin), and sophomore
Josh Parker (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) captured one individual event apiece for Gettysburg, which also took second in 10 events.
The Bullets trailed 127-118 heading into the final event, the 200-freestyle relay, and needed to finish first and second for a win or first and third for a tie. But while Gettysburg would crank out a 2.75-second victory in 1:25.93, the Garnet took second and third to clinch the meet. Swarthmore's B team edged the Bullets' B team for third place by just 12 hundredths of a second.
Gettysburg jumped to the early lead after sophomore
Jeff Ragatz (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield), senior
Ty Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]), Collins, and Leyens captured the 200-medley relay (1:35.24). But Swarthmore came back to the next five events.
The Bullets answered with victories in three of the next five events. Collins led a 1-2 Gettysburg finish in the 50-freestyle, touching in 21.83 seconds. Junior
Parker Sorenson (Evergreen, Colo./home-schooled) was second in 22.07.
Gettysburg followed up with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100-freestyle, with Leyens leading the way with a 48.03 clocking. Junior
Francisco Nieves (Alexandria, Va./Edison) was second in 48.17 while Sorenson took third in 48.71.
After a pair of victories from the Garnet, the Bullets logged another 1-2 finish, this time in the 500-freestyle. Parker won in a photo finish with freshman
Duncan Proxmire (McLean, Va./Langley), as the two finished in 4:48.54 and 4:48.69, respectively.
Swarthmore went on to pick up an extremely close victory in the 100-butterfly, winning by a hundredth of a second, before taking first and second in the 200-IM, setting up the decisive relay.
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Wednesday, when it visits Dickinson at 7 p.m. in another Centennial Conference match-up.
